As clean filters, the product is not restrictive to air flow. Filters will become restrictive if they are not changed when needed. We say filter life is approximately 3 months and this is an approximation. Filter life is actually determined by the user's living conditions and will vary for every user. To determine when the filter needs to be change, we suggest holding it up to the light. When you cannot see light through the filters, it will need to be changed even if it is before 3 months.

If you are concerned about airflow, you might want to use the Dust & Pollen filter, which has the lowest pressure drop. The capture rate of this filter is also lower. If you have a high velocity furnace with high fan speed, you may need to change the filters more frequently, every 1 1/2 to 2 months.

Customer Review: Decent job removing allergens
Summary: 4 Stars

Seems to have relived my sons allergy problems reasonably well. With the old filters I used, my some would start sneezing as soon as he walked in the house to visit from college. Since I installed this filter he is definitely sneezing less.

Customer Review: shuts down furnace, restricts airflow, could damage furnace
Summary: 1 Stars

This is not for THIS product. It is for the Filtrete 1700 (blue package) their BEST product.

I wanted better filtration because of allergies. Thought I'd try the Filtrete 1700 (blue package), the Max-Allergen BEST FILTER (with the 1700 rating).

Slapped it in and the house just would not get warm or stay warm. We punched the temperature up a little Still not feeling warm. Then the furnace actually SHUT DOWN. I pulled the Filtrete filter and everything started working again.

Strange.

Called 3M Filtrete customer service. Explained the situation. We have a newer two-speed 80% efficiency furnace. They were mystified. They suggested I replace the filter. I explained that you could still see sunlight through the filter, it was only slightly dirty. But I went out and bought another one anyway.

Things seemed a little better (no furnace shut down) but it was still much cooler in the house. The furnace didn't seem to be doing its job very well. Pulled the Filtrete 1700 and put back the old washable electrostatic filter I'd used for years. Twenty minutes later the house feels much warmer and airflow is significantly better.

Side note: When I put the old filter back in, the furnace felt much warmer than usual. I am convinced that the filter was significantly restricting airflow and would eventually cause it to be damaged. I doubt the damage would have been just to the blower motor. I am concerned that it could also damage the heat exchanger, because of the additional call for heat that the furnace could NOT deliver with the Filtrete filter in place. Crack a heat exchanger and you stand the risk of poisoning your family with CO2 fumes. To say that I am uneasy about using Filtrete is an understatement.

Customer Review: Too high a restriction, the house got cold...
Summary: 1 Stars

I found this Amazon product page while looking for information on furnace problems and this filter.

We've been using the red "micro" Filtrete filters for years. This was our first try with the purple "Ultra" filters. I tried one in December, and removed it today (January 3, 2010).

It cut our heating ability by at least 40%!

With the red Filtrete, we have at least 92 degrees of heating ability: if we set the thermostat at 72, the house maintains 72, even when the outside "ambient" temperature (the average of the day's low and high) is -20 degrees F.

Yesterday and today, we lost the ability to maintain temperature. On a day with an average temperature of 10 degrees F (low of 5, high of 15) the house dropped to 65 degrees. So, instead of being able to heat the house to at least 90 degrees above the outside temperature, we are down to only 55 degrees.

The FAQ on the 3M site glosses over this problem.

"Do I have to worry about restricted airflow with Filtrete filters?
Filtrete filters are designed to operate in most residential furnaces and air conditioning systems. If a Filtrete filter remains in use longer than three months, it may begin to restrict airflow or cause the system to malfunction. It also could restrict airflow in some higher efficiency/air conditioning systems. In this case, change the filter more frequently."

Bull! Our furnace isn't "high efficiency", it's an older 125000 BTU Singer, with a 160 degree limiter on the heat exchanger. A 3 or 4 week (not month) old purple "Ultra" choked the furnace, but when I put the 2 month old red "Micro" back in, the temperature came right back up!
