Tools and Hardware Reviews of Air-O-Swiss 32838 Ultrasonic HumidifierCustomer Review: Cool features, hot looks! Summary: 4 Stars
Pretty much everything I was hoping for! I reviewed humidifiers EXTENSIVELY before choosing this model; it is expensive but the option to choose between cool & warm mist seemed worth it. Honestly, I don't think the choice is that great - I only use the warm (was planning on using cold but it adds a week between cleanings & cools the air, triggering the heater which dries the air out, so...) That's my main problem, it can't keep up with this DRY air in Colorado! So one star off, but not the product's fault. My condo is just under 900 sq. ft. with vaulted ceilings, which is slightly more than it's supposed to be able to handle. I've been running a second, smaller unit in the bedroom, which helps. The humidistat seems pretty accurate, it's usually within 5-8% of my separate external unit. I fill 2x/day, run constantly on high & almost never run out of water. It does shut off when empty, which is nice. The "sleep" setting on mine targets 50%, I thought it was supposed to be 60% but it will never get close (ha!) so doesn't much matter... I would say instead of ordering refill demineralization cartridges, get the refill beads & do it yourself - saves money, garbage & is really easy. Can be awkward to fill tank, but that sort of comes with the territory. Takes a few times to figure out how to get it on the base properly when full, but once you get the hang of it no prob. Controls are intuitive, peruse the booklet once & you're set. The cleaning brush is a neat feature (worth $20? Who knows...) I'd def. recommend to people with ultra-mod decor that want a stylish unit - looks more like a stereo or speaker!
Customer Review: Serves the purpose, worth the money Summary: 4 Stars
We bought this to conquer the constant dry nose/congestion from living in AZ. We were ablet to get a 10% discount b/c the Air-o-Swiss model that we originally wanted was not available. As far as meeting our goals, it rocks!! I (pregnant and always congested due to hormones) can now sleep without a constant feeling of needing to stand in a warm shower! We have reverse osmosis water available and when we use it, we do not notice the powder. However, when we "cheat" and use water from the tub (we do have a water softener), we notice the white powder. We note that regardless, the cleaning indicator goes on every two weeks. We love the features of how easy it is to fill, maintain and that it is effective for our very large master bedroom. We also like the styling- very Star Trek!!! I love the feature of warming the mist, but without allowing an environment for bacteria to fluorish. The silver filter does the trick- silver is used in medicine for bacteriostatic purposes. Complaints: customer service at Air-o-Swiss never returned our call regarding the lack of clarity of instructions on preparing the silver filter. Ideal if the humidifier is placed on a higher surface so the mist can vaporize prior to settling on the carpet. The illumination from the frontal portion of the humidifier is quite bright- we certainly do not need any night light features in our room. Neutral comment: there is slightly more than a faint hum, but it is a pleasant white noise. Overall: we are considering one for our baby's room when he makes his big debut.
Customer Review: Best Humidifier I Have Tried Summary: 4 Stars
I have been using wick-based humidifiers for the past few years in the bedroom. Last year I noticed every morning when I woke and I used the humidifier, I was constantly congested. I stopped using it and looked for another type, leery of vaporizer types because of past experience with white dust.
I found this AOS 7142....pricey, and I was worried about white dust...but I liked the concept of the silver bar to inhibit bacteria growth and the demineralization cartridge to minimize dust.
I have been very impressed so far. No lung congestion. No white dust....I live in the Dallas area.
Pros: effective, silent, maintained 600 ft bedroom at 50%; choice of warm mist (I think this setting works better, but more $$ to operate) or cold mist, styling, controls, full tank at full blast lasted about 14 hours.
Cons: filling water tank; it has a handle to carry water container back to unit, but none on the other side to hold the container when filling it....and it gets heavy. Plus the container cannot stand by itself upside down and tips over.
If it wasn't for this latter design flaw, I would give it 5 stars, but good enough to make me buy another one for my home office.
Customer Review: a good ultrasonic Summary: 4 Stars
First off, this unit does not have a 3.5 gallon capacity. Its really
just shy of a 2 gallon capacity (perhaps 2 full gallons if you removed
the filter cartridge that sticks into the water tank).
This unit puts out a good volume of mist at a high rate and does it
quietly. It's about twice as fast as my other (older) unit and
quieter to boot. The nozzle can spray in two directions, which
I find helps distribute the mist into the air better.
I don't use this with hard water -- if you plan on using hard water
I just wouldn't use an ultrasonic humidifier, get one of the wicking
humidifiers.
The water reservoir has a sturdy handle that is nice for carrying
when its full. However, a couple negatives for me are that the
tapering of the reservoir make it look unstable when you're filling
it (haven't had it fall over though). Also, I keep this up on a
dresser, and its hard to put the full reservoir (which is heavy)
back onto the unit. That would be less of an issue if kept on a
table or floor.
Overall, I'm happy with this unit and its been running almost
continuously this winter.
Customer Review: It works as great as it looks, but with design flaws... Summary: 4 Stars
I only allow high-tech looking appliances in my house and this Korean-made machine meets that criterion w/ flying colors. My water is very hard (got a neutralizer system) and I see no white dust, just use distilled water if you have concern in this field. But this unit has its own share of design flaws: 1) When you lift up the empty water tank, water drips, have a towel ready. 2) As you fill it in your bathtub, there is no good way to stabilize it & its base (which would normally be its top) is not flat, disaster is prone to happen. 3) The 2-week maintenance schedule is a lil' much. 4) The EZ Cal pack is sufficient for 2 cleanings yet there's no easy way to pour out only 1/2 pack. 5) I need to refill this tank once every 2-3 days and my room is a mere 150 sq.ft. (8' ceiling) w/ a normal RH of 30~35% (desired RH is 40~45%). 6) Do you have a place to place this at the optimal recommended height of 36" or higher? Luckily I do but not everyone does, right?
