Tools and Hardware Reviews of Air-O-Swiss E2441 Evaporator HumidifierCustomer Review: The only top-load humidifier I've found Summary: 5 Stars
Two years ago, my father started getting nose bleeds. The air in his apartment was very dry so I started looking for a humidifier for him. The challenge was finding one that he could fill on his own. He was 89 at the time.
The Air-O-Swiss Evaporator was the answer. He simply was not able to carry a filled 2-gallon tank and flip it to put it in place. With the E2441, he fills a one-quart bottle and pours it into the top of the unit.
The Evaporator has been running 24/7 for two years. (My father insists on using it in the summer as well as the winter.) He cleans it semi-regularly and has changed the filter and the silver stick. And his nose bleeds are much better.
Overall, I'd say this is an excellent humidifier but, for someone without the strength or balance to carry a filled water tank around, it is the only humidifier to buy.
Customer Review: After a Year, Still Satisfied! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought this product a year ago after MUCH research and am still very satisfied! It runs in the livingroom to accomodate an open floorplan kitchen/livingroom- approximately a 800 sq ft area). After working an average of 15 hours a day, every day from January-May, and now again since October-January- it works like new! It has never leaked on our wood floors or caused any damage to the wall or paint it sits near. The sound isn't bothersome. The pieces are easy to clean in my average sized kitchen sink, its SUPER easy to fill, and the filters are easy to change. After going through many other types of humidifiers that break, leak, hum annoyingly, and are a pain in the rear to fill, AOS e2441 is a champ... and did I mention it keeps my Colorado dry winter air pleasently moist (and my skin quite comfortable!)
Customer Review: modern little unit Summary: 5 Stars
The humidifier is very quiet on the low setting. There are only 2 fan speeds so it was kept simple. It has a very innovative design because there is no tank to remove and fill under the sink. Instead you can add water from the top using a pitcher. The replacement wicks are more pricey than the Vornado evaporative humidifier. The cost of the wicks is a concern if you let it run out of water because then the wicks will gather dust and need more cleaning or possible replacement depending on how long you have let it run empty. (I edited this review so I would have put 4 stars rather than the original 5 but the "edit review" features do not allow you to change the number of stars.)
Customer Review: Works great. Doesn't hold enough water. Summary: 4 Stars
I really like this humidifier, even though it's not as powerful as other ones I've had. My primary reason for loving this product is that I don't have to haul the water container around to fill it. You just pour water in the top, like a flower pot! That being said, I wish it held more water. I fill it twice a day.
We run it at top speed most of the time, because the slower speed is SO slow that it doesn't provide much humidification. I don't find the noise to be a problem. You can hear it if you are listening for it, but it's like "white" noise, and it's not that loud.
The wicks last two to three months, and they cost approximately $22 each. This isn't so much more than what I've paid for lesser humidifier wicks/filters.
We've had this for two years, and I haven't had any significant problems. It sits on a hardwood floor. No leaks or any damage to the floor, and it's in a place where it doesn't get knocked around, so I haven't had problems with stability (as noted by another reviewer). Even so, it seems pretty stable to me, especially when it's full.
I haven't replaced the silver stick, but as far as I can tell, it doesn't do anything anyway. We have a water softener, so there are no mineral deposits; it just gets a little slimy in there. I do take it apart once a week (okay, maybe once every two weeks) and clean the slime out of the bottom of the water tank. I put some vinegar and water in it and let it sit for an hour, then wipe it out and rinse. I've had to do this with every humidifier I've ever owned, so I don't see it as an unusual problem.
The only issue I have is that I tend to overfill it. If you overfill, the wick doesn't sit in the water and it dries out (and then your humidifier doesn't work). Just be mindful of that, and you'll be fine.
Also, it looks kind of neato. I had someone ask me what the "egg" was, and they were impressed when I revealed that it's our humidifier!
Customer Review: Not as bad as others think Summary: 4 Stars
I've owned and operated another AOS product for many years. I was recently in the market for a new humidifier/evaporator, so I visited the best retail store(accepts all coupons and has great return policy) with the best AOS selection around-Bed, Bath and Beyond. The egg shaped AOS unit looks certainly appealed to me, as well as the price. So here are my thoughts:
Design: Excellent. Red DOT Award Winner. Light, sleek and user friendly
Quality: NOT MADE IN CHINA. The unit is made in Switzerland. I think the only itmes exported to the US from Switzerland these days are watches, humidifiers, gourmet chocolate and cookies.
Use: The only humidifier I know of that you can fill like a flower pot. It is so simple to use. The finger slider switch at the front has only three modes for simple adjustment.
Noise: Level 1 is quiet. Level 2 is slightly louder without doubt, but nothing to really complain about, although, if used in a bedroom the sound my be too loud. I use the unit in a living room adjacent to a television and the noise is just background white noise to me.
Cleaning: Take your time and read the directions and you'll be fine. After the first time, "you'll be able to do it in your sleep". Use the EZCAL descaler(cleaning accessory) to help avoid buildup of minerals in the base. Dust and dirt does build up in the evaporator wick(replacement accessory), but dirt in the wick is better than dirt in your lungs. If you maintain the unit as instructed, it will run well forever.
Performance: In Colorado, it is very dry, so this little machine must be on 24/7. It probably will work best in smaller rooms. The specs from AOS will give you an idea of the ideal size room for use. MY unit sits on a hardwood floor without any warping or damage.
