Tools and Hardware Reviews of Aube by Honeywell TI033/U 7-Day Programmable Timer Switch, White

Customer Review: Excellent timer
Summary: 5 Stars

Update: Problem fixed. I'm revising my rating to 5 stars. Programming the timer was not intuitive (this is my first timer and I didn't take time to read the manual). Its been working fine for two weeks now.

Old review:
I purchased this (TI033) from Amazon after reading positive reviews about it. I wanted to use it to control two garage lights - 5W each (25W incandescent equivalent) , cold cathode bulbs. My switch box has a black (hot) wire, two black wires tied by wire nut and 3 white (neutral) wires tied by a wire nut. I believe I followed the wiring instructions correctly. However, upon turning the power ON from the breaker and the ON/OFF control on the timer switch on ON, the display remains blank. Upon resetting it, the display flashes for a second and goes blank again. I tried to contact Aube Technologies, but was listening to music for 25 mins! I want to confirm that the problem is with the switch before returning it back to Amazon. Any idea what might be going wrong?

Customer Review: Great Products - Easy to install
Summary: 5 Stars

You need a Neutral wire (WHITE) for this model. The instructions are easy to read and the product is well made. The readout is quite clear even in dim lighting. My installation went like this: Leave power on, remove old switch cover and loosen the screws on the existing switch. Use a multimeter to test which of the BLACK wires is hot (called the line) and which one goes to the light (that is called the load). You will also need to identify the neutral. To do this connect one terminal of the multimeter to the WHITE/Neutral wire and the other to a ground; You should only register a few volts (<20Va). Then disconnect the power by throwing the circuit breaker. Test the wires again; they all should show 0-Vac. Connect the wires up: Black(Line/HOT)-Black(Switch), Black(Load/Light)-Blue(Switch, and White(Neutral)-White(Switch). Turn the break back on and test! WORKS Great!

Customer Review: Great Timer
Summary: 5 Stars

After reading about problems with other timers, I came across this one. Since I only use the special circuit for Christmas lights, the lack of sunrise/sunset correction was not important to me. For two months the ballpark settings worked well. It was great to have the lights come on around dusk and turn off at midnite. Then I had it turn on when I woke up in the morning so when I drove to work in the dark I could see my Christmas lights that took so much work to put up. This also was good for other early commuters to see my display. Then it turned off around sunrise. Was pretty easy to program once I got my reading glasses!! A flash light maybe needed as it can be hard to read in dimly lit areas. Read the instructions first. It was easy to turn off for the off season. Will now look at the one with the sunrise/sunset feature for the front lights to use all year.

Customer Review: Easy to Program and Works as Described
Summary: 5 Stars

I installed this controller to operate an in-wall Broan heater. I use it to pre-heat the bathroom in the morning. Works like a charm. I preset the thermostat on the heater and let the Aube programmable timer turn it on and off so the bathroom is toasty warm when I get up. It was very easy to program and set the time. Display is small and hard to read in dim light, but considering the size of the unit it was to be expected. You can easily over-ride the timer by just pressing the front. One quick press activates the heater or turns it off but the timer is still functioning. Press it longer toggles it between timed operation and manual only operation. One thing, the switch is big with heavy duty wiring to handle the load rating. It likely will not fit in a standard depth switch box. I had to swap the box to a deeper model to fit the switch and wiring.

Customer Review: Should Have Bought This Years Ago!
Summary: 5 Stars

What a great switch! I should have bought this years ago. The timer is easy to use and allows a lot of flexibility on settings. I wanted a switch like this to keep my outdoor lights on when I'm away and to ensure they are on when I get home from work. It does exactly that. No more fumbling in the dark for my house keys. I also love that it has a built-in battery which keeps the program settings in the event of a power outage. No need to worry about the lights going out while you're away from home.
It is true that the timer switch is fairly big and requires some effort to make it and the wires fit in the junction box. Thankfully I had a 3-Gang box to work with and managed to push all of the wires behind the other two switches in the box. It might be trickier with a single box.
I couldn't be happier with this purchase!
