Tools and Hardware Reviews of BRK Brands 9120B Hardwired Smoke Alarm with Battery Backup, Single Individual from Contractor PackCustomer Review: Easy installation Summary: 4 Stars
I replaced all 9 smoke alarms in my house with the BRK2190B in about 20 minutes. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is that the old ones were BRK (about 8 years old) that were starting to give false alarms (naturally at 2 or 3 in the morning). I have had them for a couple of weeks with no issues. The old ones did not indicate which unit had failed and was hard to trouble shoot). I had removed four of the 9 in the last year. All 9 of the new ones worked, and I had no issues. Only time will tell if I made the correct choice, but at least the BRK2190B will show me which unit caused the alarm. I have talked with other people with other alarms, and they all seem to have false alarms, so I am hoping the new ones work better. I admit I have not maintained them according to the manufacturer instructions, but who cleans them every month and test them every week.
Customer Review: Remember to follow maintenance directions. Summary: 4 Stars
The instructions say to vacuum with a soft brush attachment and to test once a month. As with many electronics, dust is a big issue. As well as storms and power surges. We have these units throughout our home and the have worked reliable until we started have random beeping in different rooms. We read the instructions, starting cleaning the units and testing them. All but one stopped beeping. I went on line to read the trouble shooting directions and did everything. The unit still beeped once the next day. I called customer service. They talked me through what I had done, said that it is under warranty and are send me a new unit. Absolutely no hassles.
Customer Review: So far it works for me and they are cheap (30% less than) on Amazon.com Summary: 4 Stars
I ordered 6 of them and it took 5 min to install all 6. My old Smoke alarms activated all (6) at once one night and I called local Fire department. They checked the alarms and told me to replace all. I think we have to replace these after every 10 years. So, I was looking for them and found on Amazon.com for $9.50 (in store it is $15 each). Not seen the issues that others reported so far. Also, you can not just buy some other model and install because the wiring is different and you have to re-wire them again if you do not buy other models that do not have similar pins. I hope this helps.
Customer Review: BRK Brand Hard-Wired Smoke Detector Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased these as replacements for existing hard-wired smoke alarms. They were very easy to install and came with a 9-volt battery. Perfect for our needs, but should only be purchased if you are hard-wiring your new home for smoke-detectors or replacing hard-wired smoke-detectors. Our old ones (same manufacturer but older model) all gave out within the same six months. I believe that's because we didn't test them on a monthly basis so the internal capacitor built up enough charge to fry the unit. I suggest pressing the test button regularly to prevent that from happening.
Customer Review: Excellent smoke detector replacement Summary: 4 Stars
This replacement for the originally installed smoke detector functioned flawlessly immediately. The only thing that keeps me from rating this a 5 is the battery compartment is a little difficult to deal with, particularly when changing batteries in an overhead placement.
