I was driving myself crazy while researching for a stick type vacuum for bare floors because there are lots of choices and every vacuum has both good reviews and bad reviews. I'm so glad that I picked this one because I LOVE IT!! (we have wood laminate in the hall, livingroom & kitchen and tile in the bathroom)
I'm surprised there are so many negative reviews because I don't have any of the problems that people have complained about and I've used this to clean pretty much everything that someone has complained about.
**April 17, 2010 update: I just added 'Husband' to the original title of my twins, cat & dog. I guess I just didn't think about the messes he makes as well ; ) He is somehow always getting both wet & dry coffee grinds on our kitchen floor & the kitchen rugs(normally I'd have to either wash the rugs or shake them outside & it was pretty much impossible to get all the grinds up w/ my old vac) This Bissell sucks every wet or dry grind right up, no problem, both on the rug & off, it leaves nothing behind! Sawdust: we purchased a new stove & had to trim the countertops a little w/ a circular saw & electric sander. There were bigger particles & tons of tiny sawdust particles covering everything. My husband thought we were going to have to wipe everything down w/ a damp cloth because no vacuum could possibly pick that up. This Bissell picked up the big pieces & every bit of sawdust, the floors were squeaky clean in a matter of minutes! This is better than I ever imagined a vacuum could be! If you have bare floors, this is a MUST HAVE!!!!!
The PROBLEMS I had with my old vacuum & swifer
Whole Food/Smashed Food
My girls have been feeding themselves in their highchairs for quite some time now but they still seem to make quite a mess. There are whole Cheerios, Kix, dried spaghetti or pasta, dried hot dog chunks as well as smooshed Cheerios & every other kind of food that get ground into a fine powder. So after my girls are done eating they typically have a bunch of food on their laps so when I pick them up even more food fall onto the floor. Since I then go play with the girls till they take a nap anything that was wet is now dry & hard(hot dog or pasta) When I used to use my regular vacuum I had to use the hose to get the whole or bigger pieces but then I'd have to use the regular vac part to suck up the finer things but it would only pick up the bigger crumbs, it didn't get the finer crumbs so I'd get the hose out again but I could never get all the crumbs. So I'd get out the swifer and that would get most of the crumbs gathered up and then I'd suck them up with the hose again, however the swifer pushed the finer crumbs into the cracks between the floors, it was pretty much a never ending battle so my floors always felt like they had crumbs and it was very time consuming for me to get the floors to actually feel clean & smooth.
Cat Litter/Fur Balls
My cat is quite the shedder, he has a combination of short hair and long hair which turns into some nice fur balls. My old vacuum would push the fur balls away while I tried to chase after them and my cats litter was too fine for my old vacuum to suck up unless I used the hose but that was time consuming and I usually missed some litter. Plus my cat makes quite a mess with his litter all the time so I was always hauling out the vacuum which is bigger/heavier, my old vac does have a bare floor option by the way.
Dog Shedding of short hair/Dried mud & grass
My dog is an English Bulldog so he has short hair and he sheds a lot, my old vacuum would not pick up his fine hair with the regular vacuum part, I would have to swifer his hair into a pile and then suck it up with the vac but his hair as well as crumbs would always slip into the cracks in the laminate floor. My dog always has to kick his back feet(like a bull) when he goes outside so he is always running in the house with mud & grass stuck to his feet and since I am normally doing something with my girls, if I don't grab him and clean his feet off right away he'll walk around the house and the dried mud & grass fall off his feet onto the floor leaving bits of dirt/grass all over. My old vacuum would pick up some of that but the bigger pieces of grass/dirt would just get pushed & I'd have to use the hose. But also the finer pieces of grass or dried mud would not get picked up and would also fall into the cracks when I used the swifer.
I have always been a clean freak but especially since my girls have been born so it seems like I spend most of my spare time cleaning our floors and never being happy that they feel clean enough. That was until I got my Bissell Versus.
THE SOLUTION
The Bissell VS easily picks up my girls whole pieces of cereal or other dried food(hot dog/cheese chunks) and actually picks up all of the fine crumbs, even the crumbs that would fall into the cracks!!
It sucks my cats litter up like nobodys business, even if the litter is several inches away this thing is so strong that is sucks the litter in. When I go after my cats fur balls this thing sucks them right up, they don't get blown away.
My dogs grass/dried mud chunks get sucked right up and even the smashed fine dirt all get sucked right up. My dogs hair is no match either, sucked right up.
This is so light weight & at first it was a little akward but within a few minutes of using it I had it down pat. I use this along the walls and in corners with no problems, it goes over the entire floor and sucks up everything so that my floors are the kind of smooth clean I am happy with. I also use this in the bathroom where fur balls like to collect and it is so much easier than my old vac and does a better job.
If you have bare floors, especially with cracks inbetween the floor boards, cats, dogs or kids, I definately recommend this vacuum. It has cut my cleaning time WAY down and actually gets the floors clean.
Also, we've got several low pile rugs that my old vac would suck right up and not get very clean but this goes right over them, getting them clean and not sucking them up!
This Bissell Versus has lots of suction power, it is light and for me, it does what it says. The canister is small but it is so easy to empty & put back in that it isn't a problem. Also, many complained the cord is too short, um, it takes like 2 seconds to unplug it and plug it back in, hardly worth complaining about. It is loud but it is a vacuum so who cares, I'm not typically trying to vacuum while watching my favorite TV shows, my cat & dog are afraid of it but they WILL live and easily go into another room. Several people said the hose is too short or you have to hold the vac up while using the hose, it is a compact vacuum that is light weight, how long is the hose supposed to be for some not to complain? I find that the length of the hose is just fine and I don't mind having to hold the vac while using the hose, it is NOT hard at all.
All I know is that my area rugs, laminate & tile floors are clean with no crumbs or anything stuck in the corners, cracks or around the legs/feet of my furniture and I have definately given the vacuum a never ending test.
Also, although I am a clean nut & was always cleaning my floors, before I got this my Mom would always have allergy fits from my cat & dog. Since I've been using this her allergies have been MUCH better when she comes over. So, if someone has allergies, definately a good buy.
So Bissell Versus my 16 month twins, my dog & my cat...Bissell WINS!!!!
