Tools and Hardware Reviews of Worm Factory DS5TT 5-Tray Worm Composter - Terra Cotta

Customer Review: unexpected problems
Summary: 3 Stars

I had a makeshift compost bin in a plastic bin from any home goods store. It worked fine, but I hated getting the worms separate from the compost when I was ready to use the compost. I ordered this worm bin because I thought it would be a great solution, not having to sort the worms after a year. I also liked the drain at the bottom for the "worm tea".

I have had the worm bin for about a year now and have always had minimal problems with fruit flies, even though I did my best to follow the instructions and cover with newspaper and mix kitchen scraps with paper scraps. It wasn't enough to have me stop using the worm bin. This bin was mostly used for kitchen scraps.

Today I have had enough and am looking into outdoor composting bins. Our whole house is overwhelmed with fruit flies directly related to the bin. I am sure that this is due to a mistake I made, but I'm not sure what I did wrong exactly. I think that the difference is that this bin does not have a tight fitting lid as my other one did. The lid prevented pests from getting into the bin.

The reason that I am still giving it 3 stars and not one is because the problem is most likely due to my own mistake, and not a problem with the bin itself. I think that if someone were a little more diligent about the mix, the product would be a good solution.

Customer Review: Not what I expected
Summary: 3 Stars

I just bought my worm farm and it's not the composter I expected. Perhaps my opinion will change in the next few months of use, but the instructions lead me to believe I am more raising worms than making compost. The purpose of the worms is to speed up the process--I should have great compost/worm castings in 3 months; however, to get the great compost I'm expected to chop up the food scraps (and note: no citrus peels)--some people actually use a blender. (I haven't figured out how big the little red worms mouths are, so I'm not sure how small I need to make their bites.) Also, the instructions suggest you can microwave your scraps to make sure you kill bacteria, etc. Maybe I'm an overly cautious new owner--I'm definitely lazier than all this expected compost-work! Anyway, time will tell just how tolerant my worms are of my lazy ways. Rest assured, though, I'll do what I can to keep them alive.

This has a nice look it's not too large and easy located slightly larger than a kitchen garbage can.
