Tools and Hardware Reviews of Chamberlain WD822KD Whisper Drive 1/2-HP Belt Drive Garage Door Opener

Customer Review: Pretty Nice
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this opener for a friend and installed it in one day. I took my time and was visiting most of the time so I am not sure how long it took. One trip to the hardware store for a 4 foot angle iron, 4 lag screws, and 4 bolts, lock washers and nuts. Another angle iron is recommended for horizontally reinforcing the door but I was told the doors are going to be replaced so I didn't bother.
The instructions are good. The unit works great. The only hard part was mounting the sensors using wood blocks attached to the garage. I measured up from the floor and didn't have to adjust the sensors. Not sure why others had problems aligning the sensors. Maybe I just got lucky. One small adjustment to get it to go all the way down and it works like a champ. The opener seems to be well made.

Customer Review: works as expected
Summary: 5 Stars

Purchased this unit to replace a dying Moore-O-Matic screw drive that was already here when I bought this house. I completely removed all parts involved with the old unit and installed new one from scratch. Besides having to adjust the down travel due to initially failing the "2x4 reverse test", it worked right out of the box. Unit makes a slight hum while operating but the sound of the door itself is louder and is all I hear. Came with two remotes, was able to use HomeLink button in my newest vehicle so all three of my cars can operate the opener as well as my home security system's remote keyfobs. Slight handyman skill required, but wasn't anywhere near as hard of a install as I thought it would be-it took me about four hours to complete. I would recommend this unit to anyone.

Customer Review: chamberlain whisperdrive
Summary: 5 Stars

This is truly a great opener. Ive had the whisper drive for 4 months now and I haven't had any problems. The belt is very quiet I agree with the other revuers. It replased a 15 year old liftmaster chain drive and that was very loud. It has a new security called security plus were when you press the butten the code inside changes and thats good. I also like the soft glow wall control because my garage gets very dark and it really helps me and at night when I'm puling my car in it is so easy to sea with the two 100 wat lights. It was very easy to install but I had to order an extention bracket from chamberlain but they were more than happy to send me one. I recomend this opener to any one that has a room above the garage because it is truly quieter than those noisy chain drives.

Customer Review: Good and Simple setup
Summary: 5 Stars

If you already have a garage door opener in place, this is a fairly simple upgrade; Just remove the existing wall button and garage door opener part and replace with newer button and garage door opener. Our old unit was a LiftMaster chain drive. The existing child sensor and wiring worked without a hitch with this unit. It took 2 adults about 3.5 hrs taking our sweet time. Saved us a ton on labor that we were quoted for. The opener is quiet and very smooth. You should adjust the power and travel distance per instruction spec. Just because it opens and closes doesn't mean its calibrated correctly to your home. I also used low-wattage bulbs(2) instead of the standard 100watt... the unit gives out a ton of light. Have fun and good luck.

Customer Review: Easy to install and whisper quiet.
Summary: 5 Stars

I am a noise freak and this thing is great. I installed both the 1/2 and 3/4 HP versions of this for a single and double door respectively. Both are extremely quiet (the neighbors agree). From upstairs, I can no longer hear the garage door opening when my wife gets home. This unit took about 2 hours for me to install but only because I had to reposition a light in the garage to make room. Also there was no previous unit in this spot so I had to position it from scratch.

At one point a second person is required to assist with the installation. I got around this by stablely positioning an igloo cooler on the top of a ladder and positioning the opener on top. So it can be done by 1 person with a little ingenuity.
