Everything about this soldering station says "quality" so you can't go wrong here whether it's for hobby or pro use. Very fast tip temperature recovery, wide selection of great quality tips, and it's nice having a cord that won't melt through if it happens to drape over the iron for an instant (silicon sheath). The cord is also very flexible so it doesn't kink or bind during use.
Came with a 1/16" conical tip which is too big for anything SMD, so I ordered some 1/32" tips to go with it.
The station has a lock-out feature to fix the temperature such that the adjustment knob will not change it. This requires a magnetic lockout pencil to fix the temperature, but it isn't included in the box. You can use any rare-earth magnet instead however, so it's no big deal.

The Weller soldering station is simply wonderful. The adjustability of the temperature enables me to safely solder a wide range of wire and component sizes. The iron reaches the proper temperature in short order and holds it quite nicely.
For perspective, I am not an electronics professional, just an intermittent electronics hobbyist. Over the years, however, I gained considerable experience soldering - having built ham radio gear, repairing televisions and radios, and most recently building a tube-based guitar amplifier. I should have plunked down the money for one these soldering stations years ago because it eliminates the need for multiple irons and it made me better at soldering due to the good ergonomics of this iron.

The Weller WES51 is without a doubt the absolute best soldering iron that a working man can justify spending the money on. It's the ONLY heavy duty iron you'll ever find that allows exact temp settings for under a hundred bucks. It allows you to set the temp only a few degrees above the melting point of the solder, greatly enhancing the quality of your work. And it's a heavy duty unit, so unlike the cheap lightweight ripoffs. The rugged and user friendly design reminds me of something made in the 1950s or 1960s. I've really enjoyed using this iron. My old iron was inexpensive and I got by with it, but it really wasn't suitable for my current project. I am building several prototype circuits for a ham radio project. I needed something smaller with temperature control. The WES51 is very comfortable to handle and very light. It warms up quickly and holds it's temperature. Depending on the variety of work you anticipate doing, you may need extra tips. I ordered an extra tip for really small work, but I will need a larger tip as well.Customer Review: Great Soldering Station

I have owned Weller products since the 60's w/am old handheld I purchased at Lafayette Electronics in Baton Rouge, LA. This is an upgrade from the orange station Weller makes, I got at Sears, that eventually died. This particular station really does a quick job of heating and the variable switch make it easy to change when different levels of heat are required. I am really pleased with it. My only complaint is that the cord on the wand could be about a foot longer, but that's OK. I just move it closer to my work.
