Thru a patented process DMT? combined the finer grit characteristics of ceramic with a light-weight aluminum base to create an unbreakable, wear resistant sharpener. Convenience of a traditional butcher steel, very light weight and designed with a comfortable handle with safety guard. An unbreakable ceramic steel is the sharpener of choose if you are the kind of chef or gourmet cook that sharpens your knives on a regular basis. If you insist on sharpening your knife when it is the slightest bit dull, then this is the sharpener for you.Made of lightweight and smooth ceramic, this steel hones knife edges in between professional sharpenings without removing any metal from the blade. One of the least abrasive knife sharpening materials, ceramic gently pushes the burr back into place without the danger of ruining the edge if the cook's technique is not exact. In addition, the ceramic is unbreakable, resistant to wearing, and nonporous for easy hand washing with mild soap and water.
Proper honing and aligning with this tool requires just a few downward strokes with light pressure while holding the blade at a 20-degree angle. The pointed tip on the end of the rod plants firmly into a cutting board keeps it from moving during honing. A steel should always be longer than the blade it is honing and, at 12 inches long, this ceramic sharpening rod can be used to maintain all kitchen knives. The steel has a sanitary black plastic handle with a guard to protect hands and a color-coded ring at the end for hanging it up. Customer Review: Sharpened my knives

Knives get dull with use. This fella keeps em sharp so I don't have to push hard enough to cause an accident.
My only beef is that the coating on the ceramics, whatever that may be, is white. The knives turn the color either dark, near black, or silver. It seems that the area becomes smoother too. Perhaps this is embeded metal on the sharpener or it is removed sharpening agent, white stuff. I don't know, but it seems to continue to sharpen even with color change.
I only use it for my personal knives, which started out sharp. I have tried it on my parents decades old knives, but was unable to achieve a uniform sharp edge in a short period of time. However, it did sharpen them, but I grew impatient and thought they should have more metal removed faster to get a uniform layer.
I think this sharpener is priced fair or just a little high for its quality.
