Tools and Hardware Reviews of DeLonghi HHP800 Mica-Panel Space Heater, WhiteCustomer Review: Great for home office and kitties Summary: 5 Stars
We bought one Oct 2008. We have solar panels on the house and a gas furnace, so we wanted to use more electricity to heat and less gas. We use this in several ways: 1) I use it to heat our small 10x10 home office while I work from home, and keep our house thermostat on 61F, 2) we turn down the thermostat to 63 in the evening and place this heater on the floor in front of our TV to keep us warmer--it doesn't heat the whole room, but the area we are sitting in stays warm, 3) to have a space heater while we watch TV that will not scare our cat off our laps (she hates things that blow, such as any space heater with a fan).
We are very happy with this heater. It keeps me warm in the office, and we are very comfortable watching TV with this turned on, about 4-5 feet away from us. Even though it does not blow air, the panel is large enough and radiates enough heat. We still use lap blankets (it is not heating the room to 72F), and feel much toastier than without it (without, I am wrapping the blanket up to my chin! not just on my lap). The cat is fine with it--it does make some clicking noises as it cycles on and off and as the panel warms up or cools down, but it does not disturb our TV viewing and the cat does not mind the noises, versus hating a space heater with air blowing on her.
It will not replace cranking your thermostat up to 72 or higher, but if you usually keep the heat down in your house, this will help you feel a bit warmer and it is great for small spaces like an office. I used to bundle up more, but that did not help keep my fingers warm on the keyboard. With this, I am much more comfortable. I am not sure about efficiency and cost of energy to run it--we just wanted something electrical that was not too wasteful. But certainly this is more efficient than heating your whole house if you are only in one room.
It has several thermostat settings from 1 to 6 plus a power setting of low and high (1 and 2)...to crank this baby up, set on 2 for high power and 6 for warmest and it will be on most of the time until your room heats up. But it is a thermostat so it is not on 100% of the time--only enough to reach the setting. I like that, but I see some reviewers are not so happy about that. What good is a thermostat if it never shuts off? You might as well just have a single on/off switch.
It has worked well for us, using almost every night for a couple of hours November through March each year, and countless days in my home office. It is still going strong, working well. I am thinking of getting a new one just because I get tired of trying to reach the plug behind the TV to move it to my office during the day--two would be nice.
