Tools and Hardware Reviews of DeLonghi HHP1500 Safeheat Mica-Panel Heater

Customer Review: Great heater, great delivery
Summary: 5 Stars

We bought this heater a few weeks ago - like others who have written comments, we use it for a baby's room. We wanted the silent heating, and the safety.

First, I want to note that this has been a very good shopping experience. We received the heater within 40 hours with regular shipping from Amazon. Remarkable.

As to the unit: We mounted the heater on the wall, which, using the four anchors supplied, makes the heater adequately secure. The heater itself is much larger than we expected, and it does not exactly blend in with the room (!)(I don't live in a Battlestar Galactica set) .... but that hardly seems significant. It adds the 10-odd degrees we need to the room, and it does so on nearly the lowest setting. The thermostat feature, once you figure out how to set it just right, works perfectly well, and holds a uniform temperature (With that said, though, the next generation of this heater should come with a true thermostat). The sound it makes is just a muted crackling when the unit clicks on, and my son (24 months) has never seemed even to notice it. Final comment: If you are running the heater at a low setting, you really can touch the front briefly, when it is on, and not get burned. All in, for this kind of application (silent heat in a smaller room) this seems like a really good technology.

One caution: Before you use it, you should run the heater on high someplace that is well ventilated, and for at least several hours. Meaning, at least 3 or 4 in my experience. The heater makes no smell at all now, but the smell in the first couple of hours was pretty nasty. The manufacturer does note this need on the front of the unit (with a sticker) and in the manual, which is good, but you may need to do even more than the two hours they recommend. You absolutely would not want that smell in a baby's room.

All in all, for the money, this gets an A.

I also bought one of the Holmes micathermic heaters, at Target, for Grandma's house, and have the same comments overall. Equivalent units and features, but I don't think you can hang the Holmes unit on a wall.

Customer Review: So far it's been great!
Summary: 5 Stars

We purchased this heater approximately 3-4 months ago after reading a number of mixed reviews...we selected it because we liked the size, the idea that it was portable, and that it could be wall mounted. We've found the back gets quite warm, and have opted to keep it in the floor stand. Seems safer, and we think it may actually help heat the room better.

The room we are heating is a converted porch between out house and garage (a breezeway) which is 10x16, with 10 ft Pella sliding french doors on either side. We do not have any other heat in this room -- and while the windows have good insulation, the room would typically be 35-55 degrees in the deep of winter (depending how cold it gets outside). This is because the floor leaks cold, and the garage is not insulated. We wanted to use the room as an office & secondary play area for our 3 year old, and to be at 65-70 degrees for comfort.

When we first set the heater up, it did emit a chemically odor for the first day. It also didn't "feel" as though it was doing much when we first began using it -- it doesn't blow hot air, etc. It gets very warm, but not so hot to the touch that you'd get burned with brief contact. Initially I was actually concerned that it wasn't working too well. But after about 60 minutes, the room had warmed from about 50 degrees to maybe 62-65 degrees.

What we found is that when we shut it down at night, the room gets very cold again by morning. Instead we've been using it 24/7 on a lower setting. With nearly 3 ft of snow outside and frigid temps, it's still keeping the room close 68-70 degrees during the day. Our electric bill has gone up, and my husband estimates it's running as much as $75/month in power during the coldest months -- similar to an air conditioner in the hottest months.

Given the fact that we needed the extra space and can use this heather instead of spending thousands to get something permanent installed, it seems to be a fair value. We spend a LOT of time in our sunroom now -- which was impossible before this heater.

Customer Review: Works well and, unlike most, it ain't ugly.

One of the most aesthetically pleasing space heaters I've ever seen. it can be sat on rollers or mounted to wall. It can keep my uninsulated 4,000 cubic foot (20' wide x 20' long x 10' high) garage at a tolerable temperature when it's 15 degrees outside.

Tip #1: As with any new space heater, it will emit an unpleasant chemical smell when first used. When it's new, I suggest you set it on high and place it in the garage or outside for 3 to 4 hours before using it inside.

Tip #2: Hot cords/plugs are usually the result of using the wrong gauge of wire in your extension cord or electrical outlets. Use at least a 14-gauge (I'd probably go with a 12-gauge) extension cord and plug it into an outlet that is wired (with 14, preferable 12, gauge wire) to at least a 15-amp circuit breaker. This will be the only thing you'll want running on that circuit breaker. If you don't do that, then don't complain about hot plugs or wires. It's not the heater's fault. It's a basic principle of electricity.

Tip #3: No, it's not going to produce as many BTUs as a propane or kerosene heater will. Electrical heaters are quite capable of producing equal BTUs, without producing carbon monoxide like gas heaters do, but they also have to make it safe to plug into a wall outlet and that means about 1500 watts max. If you have a large room you've been heating with a gas heater and you want to replace it with an electric heater, then you're going to have to get a 240v 30 Amp (or better) heater and probably have an electrician wire it in for you on a dedicated dual-pole circuit. This is a space heater, not a furnace. It's for making warm rooms warmer. Don't disparage this heater because you got the wrong tool for the job. Do your research.

Tip #4: If you want to remove the stickers from the face of the unit and the adhesive is being stubborn, then try heat. If that doesn't work, then go to an auto parts store. They sell several different adhesive removers that are safe for painted surfaces.

Customer Review: Works just great! I am very pleased.

I bought the DeLonghi Oil-filled Radiator with ComforTemp, the DeLonghi Micathermic flat panel model, and the Oil-filled Radiator without ComfortTemp. All of them work GREAT.

I have each one in a section of my @1800sq.ft.house, so that I can heat just the rooms that we are using, instead of turning on central gas heat.
The ComforTemp model heats up our entire great room/family room/dining room and kitchen, which is one big open space with hardwood floors and gets chilly.

The Micathermic model I use to warm up the hallway, bathroom, and kids' bedrooms, especially at night (on a low setting).

The non-ComforTemp model I use to warm up the master bedroom and bathroom.

They all do a fantastic job. Our house is warm, cozy, quiet and comfortable...MUCH more so that when we used the gas forced air central heating, which is incredibly loud, drafty, too hot and dry when it's on, and too cold when it's not.

There were a bunch of comments about the smell of the heaters when new. Well, there was a bit of smell on the first day using the heaters, but it's totally gone now, and it was never really that bad.

There were a bunch of negative comments about the heaters being noisy. Well, if the heater is really cold it does make a few popping noises when it starts heating up (which go away once it's warm) and there is a quiet clicking noise from the thermostat when the heater turns on and off. Seriously, anyone who is bothered by those tiny noises needs to get off the crack already. They are MINOR. It is unreasonable to expect perfect silence, although that's what you get 99% of the time with all three of these heaters.

Honestly, I couldn't be more pleased. I love these heaters and they were a great investment. I have already seen a drop in our utility bills, though our house is warmer and cozier than it was before.

I most highly recommend DeLonghi oil-filled radiators, as well as the micathermic flat panel.

Customer Review: A Real Good Heater

Hmmm, I have a Kenwood heater with the same design, same features, so I have to wonder if this unit is the same as the Kenwood unit? If not, this one is about $10 cheaper.

Anyway, I've had the heater for two months now and it works as well as my previous heater, an oil-filled unit that lasted about five years before it quietly gave up the ghost. I hope this wall mounted heater will last as long.

So far, I like it very much although there are a couple of things that make this heater a little less than perfect: 1) while it has no fan to make a noise, it does make a little noise anyway although it's just a low poping sound every once in a while and 2) is a annoying design flaw where the control knobs are to the right of the unit, so that when the heater is on, one has to reach across the front of it to adjust the knobs. That, of course, can get kinda hot. The knobs should have been to the left, but I guess this is nitpicking a bit.

I gave it five stars because so far, it has worked very well. If it continues, I'd say the five stars are an apt rating. But if it breaks down in another few months like so many of the previous heaters I've bought, I'll be glad to change the rating. But as far as I can tell right now, this is a very good heater and I recommend it to anyone looking for a space heater that can be easily wall mounted and kept out of the way.

One last thing though: when mounted on the wall, the wall does get fairly warm after a while. I don't know if this is a potential problem, but I suppose it wouldn't last long on the market if it is.
