Tools and Hardware Reviews of DeLonghi TRN0812T Portable Oil-Filled Radiator with Programmable TimerCustomer Review: Very Good Space Heater Summary: 5 Stars
I own two of those, bought them from Amazon. This is the third winter we have them, and they work great. The amount of heat is amazing for such a small device, they keep the bedrooms nice and warm, even with the thermostat at about 1/3 the max setting (the scale is a bit odd, we keep it just under "3").
What decided me to choose this model is the "quadruple whammy" combination of safety, small size, silence and power.
In terms of safety, it comes with a built-in breaker in the power cord, and apparently it is safe to use even in a steamy bathroom (I did not try). There is also a level switch that shuts down the unit if it falls on its side, which pretty much cannot happen by accident because it is very stable. The unit is also supposed to shut itself down if it overheats, but we never had that happen. Safety was my number one deciding factor for a space heater, since it was going to be in a toddler's bedroom.
The small size was also an important feature, I did not want the space heater to become the focus of attention in the bedrooms. No problem there, it is small and looks nice, it blends with the décor.
As for the silent operation, this is probably common to all oil-filled heaters: no noise at all. Not quite true, actually, there is a "click" sound when it turns on and off. But since there is no fan or other moving parts, and there is no noise to wake up my son or my wife.
I already mentioned the power: it keeps the rooms hot. There are three power settings, which end up determining how quickly the max temperature is reached; medium is enough, nice balance between heat and power consumption. I was worried about the electric bill when we first got them, but with the timer on one hour and off one hour we're doing fine.
There is a negative, which was already mentioned in another review: no manual override. That means it is not possible to just turn on the heater. It is intended to be used with the timer at all times, which is relatively easy to set up in 15 minutes increments with little pegs on the circular timer (easier to use in my opinion than digital timers, because you can see it all at once), but does not lend itself to manual operation. This has not been a problem, though, the furnace provides heat during the day and the heater takes over on schedule at night.
I am about to get one of these for my parents, and I recommend it.
