Customer Review: Take the risk and buy this!

I am so happy I went with this vacuum. I was so angry when I had to throw out my expensive vacuum the other day-- kicked it to the curb, actually. It was probably the third one in about ten years, each one being about $300. And I had made the decision that I HATE BAGLESS.
So I came on Amazon determined to spend much less on an old-style vac and I was almost persuaded to buy the Hoover with canister package for $200 because the video was cool. But then I remembered my original mission and after reading all the reviews of the cheaper vacuums, they all seemed pretty much the same whether they were 49.99, 79.99, or $139.99. There were generally good reviews with a couple scary ones for each product. So I decided to start at the cheap end here and work my way up, so I bought this Dirt Devil. I figured if it died in 6 months, I only spent $50.
I am so glad I didn't let the bad reviews fool me. It is a fabulous size and weight (12 lbs)... much smaller than the trucks I was used to pushing around. It actually feels a little like a toy--kind of small and cheap--which was discouraging until I vacuumed my whole house on the first day and got used to it. I was actually happy because I had the energy to do it since it was so light! And it fit in my compact closet better than our old vacs. Of course it is about the same loudness as all vacuums... loud. But not terrible. And loudness shouldn't be a main priority in vacuuming, I firmly believe.
It was easy to put together. I wasn't expecting to have to do that, but it was simple. It worked well on my shag carpets and on my wall to wall regular carpets. It did not work as well on the berber rug or hardwood floor, but I was so thrilled to have something light and powerful for the rest of my house, I didn't really care.
Furthermore, the hand tool works great... which is saying a lot because I NEVER got into hand tools on my other vacuums. I used that on my hardwood floors instead, and on my stairs. The crevice tool is totally simple to use, even my five year old tried it. Good suction. The cord is shorter than my last vacuum's but not so short as to annoy me. The only complaint I have is that the power switch is a foot pedal rather than a switch on the handle. It's a good idea but I have to hold the cord up tight when I vacuum because if I let it drag, the slack can hit the foot pedal and turn it off pretty easily in mid-stream. No biggie considering most people hold the cord while they vacuum anyway. But I had to hold it tighter than usual.
I will update this post in 6 months to see if the quality lasts. But seriously, I've never had a vacuum--even an expensive one--that I liked so much. I have four kids, two cats, and a three story house with LOTS of carpet and stairs. So this is saying a lot.
