I've purchased four sets of these lights for my own home plus another as a gift my my in-laws. My parents own a set or two as well. I'll start by saying my local Costco sells these at a significant discount over the price here.
Since "installing" my Durofix Emergency Standby lights, we've had a few power outages. They work exactly as described, coming on when the power goes off. They are VERY bright lights, so I've actually installed a couple in outlets under the beds because they would be bright enough to wake me up during a middle-of-the-night power failure if the light weren't obscured. I have two of these in my kitchen outlets at upper body height, and they are almost painfully bright when the lights come on in a dark room.
These lights feel heavy and solid in the hand. The housing is plastic, but heavy and smooth. When the flip-away electrical plug is closed (for flashlight use), it is completely recessed into the housing and would be virtually impossible to accidentally snag open without intent. Once pulled back out, the plugs snap firmly into "plug-in position", making it much easier to plug back in with one hand than my previous experience with power failure plug-in-flashlights whose plugs would fold up when you were trying to get them in the wall socket.
You can not turn these on by pushing the switch while the unit is plugged in. They only work during a power outage or after being pulled from the wall socket.
When pulled from the wall for flashlight use, which we do regularly now that these are conveniently dispersed around the house, the light comes on immediately (and is so very bright--I've learned to immediately hit the button to halve the illumination.) The unit's flat bottom allows it to stand on a surface next to you if you don't want all those LED's shining straight up at your face with it flat on its back on a table. The top looks almost flat, but is actually rounded, so it will topple over if you try to stand it on its head instead.
I've dropped these a few times, and no sign of damage thus far. We bought our first set last fall at Costco, and the others over the past year. Since we use them more often as a quick-grab flashlight, I have seen absolutely no sign of battery fatigue, but I wouldn't expect to. They all remain very, very bright, and I have yet to experience one of these lights running out of battery power before I'm done using it and return it to charge.
Every household should have a few of these lights on hand in case of emergency or power failure and just to have a bright flashlight when needed. What a small investment of cash for such a great convenience!
