Tools and Hardware Reviews of Dyson DC21 Stowaway Canister VacuumCustomer Review: Highly recommend for hard-floors and light carpet homes Summary: 5 Stars
I'm very satisfied with this vacuum. I have a small, all hard floors (tile, wood, vinyl) home. This vacuum has SUPERB suction power, so make sure you pick up all those little things it's not supposed to be sucking up - coins, paper clips, etc. - because it will suck them up.
I find the cable length just fine. Unless you live in an unfurnished warehouse, chances are you do need to stop to maneuver around furniture and reposition the canister, etc. To think you should never need to replug it in is just unrealistic. Same for the hose. It's made of perfectly fine quality plastic and it maneuvers fine for me as well as the whole unit that follows me easily with a gentle pull. The accessories attach perfectly fine to the base and nothing falls off like I've read others say. I even had to pull a little hard to get one out the first time I used it.
The floor tool moves along very easily and it picks up from the edge amazingly well. It has a "bumper" so it doesn't damage your furniture even though it does pick up dirt all the way on the edge of the wall or corner - must be the strong suction power. It has a foot-accessible button to turn on or off the brush - on for carpet, off for hard floor.
Everything is very easy to figure out how to put together. The extension wand "clicks" as you extend or collapse it to ensure it's in place. It will collapse if you haven't clicked it to extend it - it can't read your mind.
The instructions are also VERY easy to figure out even though it doesn't have words - again, like I read others comment on.
It's also super easy to empty out and since the receptacle is washable, you could even add water before emptying to ensure no particles go into the air. I empty it out outside of my home with no problems at all - I'm allergic to dust.
The fact that it needs no replacement filters or bags ever is a huge plus for me.
I would highly recommend this to anyone with hard-floors only or even some light carpeting home. I've owned a couple of cheaper vacuums before - electrolux stick and dirt devil upright - and nothing compares to this.
Customer Review: Great for pet hair. Summary: 5 Stars
I have five small dogs, two of which are chihuahuas, so I end up using this little machine every day. The pros far outweigh the cons which is why it got five stars from me. Nothing is perfect, but for the price and the size, this vacuum is wonderful. We have hardwood floors in most of our house and this picks up everything . . . everything. Be sure you don't have things laying around that shouldn't be sucked up because this will get them.
Pros:
Very high suction. It will get whatever is around it so vacuuming is prety easy which is always a plus. Especially if you have to do it every day.
It's size makes it great for storing. It doesn't take up nearly as much space as some of the bigger models, but it's more powerful than nearly any vacuum I've ever used.
It rolls well on hard floors. It's not as great on carpet, but on our floors, it glides along perfectly and moves around furniture very easily.
It comes with almost any attachment you could need. I've just purchased some other attachments, but you really don't need them. It comes with a little mini brush that's great for furniture.
Of course, like with anything, there are cons.
The cord is short. You will have to unplug this in every room unless you live in a very small home.
The attachments, while great, don't lock in so they do come off occasionally.
It's not as good on carpet as it is on hardwood. But for some reason, it works really, really well on furniture. I can't figure it out, but it's fine for us because we just don't have that much carpet.
All in all, this is a great little machine for the price. It does what it's supposed to and I've been using it every day for over a year and it is still working just as well now as it did the day I took it out of the box. There are a lot of expensive vacuums in my family. Some of them cost well over a thousand dollars and I'd put my little Dyson up against them any day of the week.
Customer Review: Great when it works Summary: 5 Stars
I've got 3 dogs and a cat in my house, and a dust allergy, so a good vacuum is not only desirable, but an absolute necessity. This vacuum sucks up fur like it was never even there. Easily the best suction of any vacuum I've ever used.
My complaints about it are the fact that the hose attaches asymmetrically, so the unit is hard to pull around corners or other obstacles without tipping it over; the hose attachments clip on weakly and thus fall off a lot, and the place where the debris enters the canister forces the debris to make a 150 degree turn which inevitably leads to clogs if suction is less than 100% - your filter MUST be kept very clean.
(Edit) - I've edited this review because I just got some awesome customer service from Dyson. They replaced the broken power head in a week(including shipping both ways) after deciding it was not fixable. They also did some tuneups on the unit free of charge, with several brand new parts, and cleaned the machine so thoroughly I'm not convinced the whole thing isn't brand new.
A word of advice - if you need warranty service from Dyson, DO NOT use the email links on their website, phone them. Email got me zero service, phone got me excellent service.
Customer Review: Dyson DC21 Summary: 5 Stars
Excellent compact design, with full list of accessory tools from dust brush, crevice tool, and hardwood floor head. Stores easily, and comes with a collapsable tube/wand for easy storage. Power head could use a rug height adjustment, as the brush tends to bog down on thicker carpet. Power head has a convenient on/off switch which saves hardwood floors, should you have the power head attachment going from carpet to bare floors. The vacuum has very powerful suction, in fact, on many occassions, it actually lifts mats (such as bath mats) right off the floor. Machine never loses suction (as per the manufacturer's claims,) but because the dust collection cannister is rather smallish, I have personally never had the opportunity to see this ~ the cannister fills up, but is easily emptied. Using the vacuum on a 1200 sq ft apartment with a mix of carpets and hardwood floors (50/50), I've found that the collection cannister is about 80% full after two complete runs.
Totally satisfied with Dyson product, and having used many different brands of vacuums (Hoover, Eureka, Phantom, Filter Queen, and Tri-star), I would have to say that this unit is the BEST of them all.
Customer Review: UNBELIEVEABLE Summary: 5 Stars
We can't say enough great things about this fine vacuum. We bought it mainly for our Vintage Airstream. We travel with 3 kitties and the small upright we have been using looses suction as soon as kitty hair clogged the bagless bin, which would be about ½ way through the trailer. So we took our new Dyson in there and was shocked - like the other folks - what it picked up - the bin was full of dirt and kitty hair and we had just vacuumed it with our former vacuum! So then we took it into the house and had the same experience. Now my wife wants to use it instead of our wind tunnel. Everything in this monster is well thought out and it is very easy to take apart and put back together. Winding it up is no big chore. We thought a lot about putting this much money in a vacuum, but now am glad we did. We were considering re-carpeting the house, but now the wall to wall rugs look great with new life given by our Dyson. Our house is 3600 sq ft so we figure the Dyson saved us several thousand dollars. A big thank you to Mr. Dyson and all the folks who worked on this project!
