Tools and Hardware Reviews of Dyson DC25 Ball All-Floors Upright Vacuum Cleaner

Customer Review: Quality vs Quantity
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased this vacuum with a little apprehension. I have learned that high price does not equal high quality. Reading past reviews, I saw that people were disappointed, however I do believe that they were expecting more due to brand association and price. I have used a Kirby Legend II, the Hoover Platinum and a in home central vacuum system. Compared the the Kirby it is much lighter and easier to use, the Kirby also has to have regular belt and bag changes. The Kirby is a very powerful machine, but for it's size and weight you would expect that. Overall the Kirby was/is much more expensive but had quality you could feel. The Hover Platinum is the closest vacuum that could compare to the Dyson. The brush head and canister are larger, and the cord is longer, these points alone made me almost purchase that instead. It also has an indicator light that lets you know if the carpet in clean or dirty, a novelty item, but fun to watch. What sold me on the Dyson was the ball and the ease of maneuvering and pivoting. The house vacuum is just convenient and will spoil you. However it is very expensive and is usually installed while the house is being built. The best thing about the house vacuum is the option of having suction levers along the baseboards around the house where you please. The kitchen is a great place to have one, if there is a small spill, just flip the lever, grab a broom and sweep it in the wall. No vacuum can compare in my opinion. With that said, the Dyson is a less expensive option that is comparable in terms of convenience. I also own a Roomba, which is a lifesaver, especially when it comes to an easy daily vacuuming all around the house and leaving the deep vacuuming to once a week. If you own a pet or keep or windows open often, get a Roomba. Overall I would recommend this vacuum. It is light, effortless, convenient and good looking too. My only complaint is the plastic used, I would have thought it would have been thicker and denser, but that is what makes it so light, however I would have rather had denser plastic than a lighter vacuum.

Customer Review: Best vacuum, reasonable price
Summary: 5 Stars

We just purchased a Dyson DC 25 all floors vacuum from Lowe's for $381 and it is living up to all of the high reviews. It is the most maneuverable and easiest vacuum to operate that we have ever used, and we have tried all that are on the market over the past twenty years. Six people and two 150 pound dogs provide a great test environment and on first use, this vacuum is proving to be up to the task.

As to the price, Sears has a 15% off on all appliances through May 02, 2009. Lowe's has a price match policy that adds another ten percent providing both the local Sears and Lowes have the item in stock. The total 25% discount from the $499 list put it at $381.

I shopped all the competitor products and was amazed at the amount of mis-information. For example, an Oreck dealer advised me that the belt change for the DC 25 was a $90 task and very difficult, that belts would last only about six months, and the cleaning needed tobe done by a professional about twice a year at great expense. There is no belt! Others had talked about clogged cones, but based on the experience of friends who own older Dyson models, this only happens if you pick up a lot of fine particles like drywall dust. As it turns out, cleaning the cones with air and an old paint brush is not a difficult task. If however you use it as a wet-dry vac and pickup some water, the cleaning may be a bit more difficult, but is still well within the capability of my technically challenged neighbor who has only found it necessary to clean his Dyson twice in five years. He was jealous that I was getting a ball, but his older machines are working too well to justify replacing them.

Bottom line -- everything from the packaging to the design and quality of construction has been of the highest quality higher than the Kirby's, Oreck's, and myriad of other brands I have purchased in the past. It doesn't appear that any of the mythical problems are systemic in nature, so if the features fit your needs and the price fits your budget, go for it!

Customer Review: Worth every penny...
Summary: 5 Stars

I was skeptical about Dyson vacs in general because of the price, but I have to say this is probably one of the best purchases I've ever made for several reasons. The main reasin is that I have nerve damage and less than normal cartilage in my lower vertebrae, which made vacuuming very painful and laborous. On top of that, I have two dogs so I vacuum all the time. This vacuum is literally a miracle for me. It is so lightweight and so easy to maneuver that I don't have any pain after doing the whole house. That is really saying something, since things as small as leaning over for 10 minutes to wash the dishes causes me pain. It practically glides effortlessly across my floors (which are half carpet and half hardwood). Seriously, I almost cried tears of joy the first time I used it.

In addition, it works spectacular, and just snapped together out of the box. The first time you use it you'll see that so much thought went into the design specifcially for functionality. It's pretty and modern, but more importantly, it's functional. I love that it can move along flush with a wall, so I rarely need to use the attachments (except to get behind stuff). And it's relatively small. I expected it to be much larger, but it's small and so very, very light. You'll really notice the difference between it's 16lb and the normal 25-30lb for other 11 amp vacs. And it's relatively quiet.

Another thing I really like is that it doesn't seem to be a dust magnet. My last vacuum cleaner seemed to attract most of the dirt to itself, rather than sucking it into the canister. I stored it outside in our laundry room because it was a stinky mess (and I'm talking about a high end Dirt Devil model that was less than a year old). The Dyson is clean enough to stay in the house after several months.

Vacuuming is not the most glamorous thing in the world, but this vac has surely revolutionized house cleaning for me. I know, silly, but it's true.

Customer Review: Best vacuum!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I was tired of having my $100 vacuums break after a year or so. And I was tired of never having a vacuum that didn't do good on hardwood floors. The reviews were excellent, I don't have a lot of money and really did my research before buying this expensive vacuum. I got up at 4am on Black Friday (1st time ever) and saved $200, but even at full price of $500, it would have been worth it! I have hardwood in most rooms with some rugs, and carpet in my bedroom. This vacuum is great on all 3!! The ease of use is great. It's very light weight for such a powerful vacuum, easy to maneuver and turn. Going from hardwood to carpet/rugs is a breeze with the press of one button. I used to do them separately and then connect the hose and get corners/floor boards. With the Dyson, the hose is so easy to use, in the mist of vacuuming the floors, pop it out get the floor boards, pop it back in and finish. You don't have to keep turning the vacuum on and off to change floor types or to use the attachments. I have bad allergies, and I love that you can empty it easily and clean it so easily. The hepa filter is even washable! - No buying parts!! It has a 5 year warranty, and lifetime replacement if it loses suction, so really this vacuum can last forever. Other reviews stated that people have dropped in down a flight of stairs several times and it stood up great, I baby mine, but have confidence in how sturdy it feels. Also like that it rolls so well, in the past when using the hose on vacuums, the vacuum falls easily if you pull the hose too far, not with this one, it just rolls with you. The only thing I regret after buying this vacuum is that I spent so much money on cheap vacuums in the past. I am now a lifetime Dyson customer. The only con I can see is for tall people, they would have to bend over more, but I'm 5'6 and not an issue for me. Love it Love it Love it!!

Customer Review: Super machine
Summary: 5 Stars

Initially I was skeptical that the higher price of the Dyson versus similar looking vaccums was justified, but after using the Dyson for a few months I am convinced that it is worth every penny. The DC25 All-Floors is definitely a superior machine.

Pros: The suction is incredible for an upright, probably 3 to 4 times the suction of our old Eureka that the Dyson replaced. The Dyson suction power reminds me of a small shop vacuum. We had carpet that was only 8 months old and it was scary how much dirt and dog hair the Dyson picked up that was being left by our old vacuum.
The ability to turn the brush bar on/off is a great feature, makes the Dyson usable on the slate, tile, and hardwood floors.
Clean and reuse filters are great.
No mess and very easy to dump the debris cannister.
The vacuum is relatively light and is easy to maneuver.
The power cord is long and the attachments work well.

Cons: No real cons worth noting, just a few observations.
It does cost more than most competitors, but buy the Dyson and you will be saying that the $200 machines from other manufacturers are overpriced.
The owners manual could and should be more informative and have more detail. If you are not mechanically inclined you may struggle to figure out some things that the manual is trying to convey, so get a good demo in the store and have someone walk you through use of the machine.
The Dyson feels different than other vacuums, the ball technology is great but it is not what most of us are used to. Don't be turned off by the feel from a demo test, use the machine for a few minutes and you will really appreciate how light and maneuverable it feels.
