Tools and Hardware Reviews of Dyson DC17 Animal Cyclone Upright Vacuum Cleaner

Customer Review: Easily the best vac I've ever used, good customer service
Summary: 5 Stars

There are plenty of reviews touting the many great features this vac has to offer, and rightfully so. Briefly, I have two dogs that shed a considerable amount and had gone through a few lower-end models before deciding to invest more money in something that would clean better and last longer. After 6 months of use, here are my interpretations:

Pros:

* Excellent suction. I cleaned teh entire living room with a very good Bissell vac and then went over it with the Dyson. I picked up another canister and a half of debris!

* Love the attachments! My favorite is the mini vac head which has a little motor in it and everything...not just a different shaped piece for the hose to suck through...this thing has a moving, spinning head that does a fantastic job on couches (which the dogs shamefully inhabit now and then), stairs, and the smaller areas between pieces of furniture.

* No more sweeping hardwood floors! The suction on this model is so powerful that clumps of dog hair that gather in corners and under stoves/fridges are history. I just push the button on the handle to go into "non-carpet" mode and vac as usual.

* Extremely easy to push. This is hands-down the easiest vac I've ever operated...looks bulky but glides on carpet with ease.

Cons:

* As mentioned above, it is bulky, so it's not just going to easily stow away in a broom closet.

Experience:
* After about 4 months of use, I noticed a slight whining noise while vacuuming. I couldn't diagnose the problem, so I called customer service. I talked to a very polite representative who walked me through removing the plastic cover and brush. There was some dog hair that had collected around the metal piece that holds the black band (which holds the brush in place). I removed the dog hair with my hands, put the brush back in place, screwed the plastic cover back on (with a quarter, no tools needed) and happily returned to cleaning.
Since that happened, I have had to repeat this process once. It takes about 2-3 minutes. Even if I have to do that once every two months, the benefits of this product far outweigh the downfalls.

Overall, this is highly recommended. I shopped around quite a bit before finding it on sale and then using coupons in conjunction with the sale to reduce the price even more. Definitely do some price-scouting since this can be a pricey choice.

Customer Review: The Best Vacuum Cleaner a Pet Owner Could Have!
Summary: 5 Stars

I don't know how many times I walked by a Dyson display in one of the local stores and just laughed at the notion that there were people out there willing to spend this kind of money on a vacuum cleaner. I mean I researched Dysons and knew they were great but could never imagine that I would buy one when you could purchase a good Hoover for less than a third of the price.

But then we got......THE DOG! A Yellow Labrador Retriever that on any given day could explode into a large cloud of unattached fur, enough to quite possibly build another dog with. And even though I knew that a Yellow Lab was suppose to be an "outdoor" dog, my wife and daughters have never quite understood this concept. So hear we are, a family of a dog with a shedding disorder that spends half the day in the house and in two years I went through three non-Dyson vacuums. Two just were not up to the task and the third committed suicide by burning up its motor. In desperation I went out and bought a Dyson DC17 Animal Cyclone Upright.

Absolutely, positively the best investment I could have made. The first time we used it we were amazed at how much more hair, dirt, and dust it pulled up compared to the other brands. Three years later it's still amazing us. It has a powerful suction that never clogs, a lifetime HEPA filter, and a "quick-draw telescope reach" that makes vacuuming the stairs and hard to reach places a breeze.

Also, the Dyson Customer Service is outstanding! About six months ago my wife accidently vacuumed up a scarf that tangled in the motorize brushbar and ended up snapping the small belt. No problem I thought, I'll just go to the local vacuum repair center and buy a new belt. Turns out that Dyson had redesigned the brushbar about a year earlier and now the new belts were too wide for the brushbar in my vacuum. I ended up calling Dyson to see if I could purchase the older style belt. Instead, without batting an eye, they sent me a new belt AND the new redesigned brushbar at no charge. I received it in three days and just had to snap it in and we were up and running. It was greatly appreciated.

I have recommended Dyson to many pet owners. In fact, one couple that laughed at us when we first bought it have now purchased a DC15 Animal Upright because of the shedding of their Siberian Husky. They are now huge Dyson fans. Great vacuum plus great customer service equals a great investment.

Customer Review: DC17 Animal--BEST VACUUM I'VE HAD
Summary: 5 Stars

I've had numerous bag & bagless vacuums--each lasts me about a year, including Hoovers, yes WindTunnel too, Bissels, Eurekas, name it. After using for a few months, the suction reduces drastically no matter how frequently I changed the filters. They get a lot of use and abuse with this animal person. 4 dogs (long and short haired), 2 cats, 5 birds (parrot family), 3 rabbits, pet rats, 2 kids, and they all make quite a mess. My Akita drops tufts of hair at each temperature change and it looks like it snowed indoors. I felt very guilty spending $475 on a vacuum initially, but was tired of buying a vacuum every year. The others take numerous swipes to get the animal hair off the carpet-especially oriental rugs, but this only a couple. As I vacuum my carpet, the suction is so strong it pulls the dog hair off the sides of the couch as I pass! I've had the DC17 3 yrs now and it puts the others to shame. The wand takes a little getting used to (little awkward till it breaks in) but the suction is tremendous. I've seen a few complaints about pulling fibers from the carpet and haven't had that issue. They either have very old, very cheap or very fragile carpets. Please note the Dyson manual recommends turning of the brush if vacuuming fragile rugs, like orientals, to prevent damage to the tufting or hand looping. I use the DC17 on carpet, orientals (not fragile ones), and tile with fabulous results. Floors clean great after turning off the brush (button switch) and you can visibly see the debris being sucked toward and into the vacuum. It is amazing what comes out of the carpet. Had pets for years then found out the kids are allergic to dogs and cats but this keeps allergens to a minimum. After 3 yrs of vacuuming birdseed, dust, dirt, sand, hair (dog, cat, human, rabbit), dander, etc., I stretched out the gasket and particles/debris worked its way into the cyclone. I called Dyson and they are sending me a new cyclone with the gasket that is permanently attached, plus several other parts that have been improved since I purchased the DC17! Gotta love that 5 year warranty that comes with the DC17!! The representative was friendly, helpful and accommodating. Overall I'm still very happy with my DC17 and feel was one of the best investments I've made, even 3 yrs later.

Customer Review: Wow!!! By far the best vacuum I've ever used!
Summary: 5 Stars

This product is amazing. I recently purchased a home, and since I would be a first time home owner I've been oogling this vacuum for a long time.

First thing I was looking for was a vacuum that would clean up after my dog. I love him to death, but he is a big hairy beast of a Lab / Retriever mix. He sheds on command it seems. (Well he always sheds, but if you tell him to he's doing it!). At my previous home I'd used a hoover wind tunnel and was constantly fighting the battle of vacuuming the dog hair, and it seems that I always lost. I've since moved, and the dog is staying with family when I had an apartment. The vacuum moved with me, and while it cleaned up ok, it just seemed like it was on its last legs. It smelled like a dog when I vacuumed.

When I finally purchased my home I took the plunge and bought this vacuum. Just tonight I unboxed it and was trying to figure out how to put it together. You just click 2 pieces together and its good to go. Thats impressive! This house was vacuumed before the sale of the house and it was very clean. After I got the boxes and all moved out I fired up the vacuum with about two swipes of around 6' or so and I immediately start seeing dust and carpet fiber piling up. Its as if they almost didn't vacuum at all! So far I've only vacuumed the living room, and I can already tell that its not necessary to even take the thing back.

Being new to the vacuum I wanted to empty the container and I couldn't figure it out. So I hit the red button, and that dumped dirt / dust all over me. No problem, I've got a live demo for the wand. It sucked up all of that stuff like nobody's business.

The wife hasn't had a chance to use it yet, and It was all my idea to buy it anyways! However I dont think that she is going to be too happy with how heavy it is. It seems like its going to be a bit heavy to lug upstairs. The vacuum is pretty loud, but I wouldn't expect it to be quiet being a vacuum cleaner in the first place.

Bottom line. Its a very steep price. I've debated about this for months, maybe even longer than that. I've used it less than 20 minutes and I do not regret the purchase price. It is a bit heavy, but I wanted the most powerful model they had for the pet hair.

Customer Review: DC17 Animal is an animal
Summary: 5 Stars

What can I say other than WOW! I spent a lot of time online looking over and reading reviews on many vacuums. I personally have owned a Dirt Devil and a Bissel. The Bissel was my current vac. It worked great until after only a few short uses the telescopic wand lost all of its suction. The owner's manual said to clean the filters so I followed the instructions and did that. After having to wait 2 days for them to dry completely, even by a heater, I finally could vacuum again. This did not last long. After about two rooms I noticed that the wand again was losing suction. This problem has gone on for the last year and I was finally fed up. I keep a clean house so there is no way my vac should clog this often. I also have no pets and just my husband and I live here. After researching the Dyson and convincing my husband that $500.00 was not more than any vacuum could be worth, I got the DC17. It works just like all the reviews claim. I can tell, even after only using it once that my carpet and house seem to smell and feel cleaner. I cleaned the whole house including dusting furniture with it and it never lost a bit of suction. The canister is so easy to empty and because it is completely sealed it is clean to carry around to the trash can. The ability to turn the rotating brush bar off makes it quick and simple to go from carpet to hard floors and on the hard floors it did not blow the dirt around the way most other vacs do. It and it's accessories are made well and seem very solid, unlike the cheap plastic of my previous vacs. Although the vac is not self propelled it almost seems to pull you along as you use it making it easy to manuver. I also have older finiky carpet that with previous vacs could only be easily vacuumed in one particular direction. With the Dyson I can go in any direction with ease. Many reviews said that using the attachments was tricky, so I went to a local store and played with one to get used to them. They are simple to figure out. This is by far a solid vacuum that does what it says it will. Absolutely worth every penny you will spend on it if you are the type of person that wants a clean house. Check back for updates as I will let you know down the line how things are going.
