Tools and Hardware Reviews of Dyson DC17 Animal Cyclone Upright Vacuum Cleaner

Customer Review: Got a Great Deal on a Great Vacuum!
Summary: 5 Stars

We waited several years and several vacuum cleaners on finally deciding to try Dyson, particularly the Animal. Expensive, yes, worth it, EVERY PENNEY! I did buy this from Sears as they have a great sale going on through the end of 2/19/08. Sorry Amazon, as much as I buy from you, I had to go elsewhere for this one.
When I did pick this up last night the bottom housing underneath the cleaner was cracked and broken with pieces missing. It had to have been packed that way as there were no pieces in the box or bag. I took it back, got another with no questions asked and away I went. I was very pleased at what it picked up compared to my Eureka "The Boss". I always thought The Boss did a pretty good job until I went over the same area with the Animal and saw what it was picking up. There were no carpet fibers, just hair and dirt.

I have to say in defense of Dyson that they do warn about picking up carpet fibers in their manual and what to do in case that happens.
Here is what the manual states:

(23) Consult your flooring manufacturer's recommended instructions before vacuuming and caring for your flooring, rugs, and carpets. Some carpets will fuzz if a rotating brushbar is used when vacuuming. If this happens, we recommend vacuuming in bare floors mode and consulting with your flooring manufacturer.

With that being said I went upstairs where we retired our Hoover "Wind Tunnel" and vacuumed over that area, same results. The amount of hair and dirt it picked up made me realize what the other cleaners were not picking up.

All in all this is a great vacuum and is well worth the money. Did I mention the 5 year warranty? Now let me see, which one of the afore mentioned vacuums besides my new Dyson have a five year warranty, hmmm.....

Customer Review: I had no idea my carpets were such a lovely shade of champagne...
Summary: 5 Stars

In the last seven years, my husband and I have gone through 2 different vacuums. Our first was a basic dirt devil and within 6 months, it was useless, even in our tiny apartment. After moving to a bigger place (with what we thought was beige carpet), we decided to upgrade to a Shark Euro Pro. Within 3 months, it was junk. We made due with it for a long time, spending hours, literally, cleaning our two bedroom apartment.

Last year, my mom got a Dyson DC15 and raved about it. We finally decided to invest in what my mom said was the last vacuum we would ever buy. We ended up getting our DC17 at best buy for $[...]. Pricey yes, but after trying it out, worth every penny.

We started out in the entry way and hallway and had to empty the container 4 times. It blew me away. I was amazed and kind of grossed out at the same time. You never want to think your carpets can be so filthy. It sucked up EVERYTHING from cat hair to my hair to dust. I was impressed by how it seemed to propel itself and how it manuevered easily. It is a little heavy but I'm kind of a weakling.

My husband tried it out in the living room and just went on a rampage (anything that will get my husband cleaning instead of me is worth any amount of money). After he finished, we noticed no matter how dim or bright the room was, the carpet looked great. We can now see what spots need professional cleaning. I can deal with spots knowing that there isn't creepy crawly things lurking in the carpet fibers that can only be seen with a microscope.

In short, this model is the most expensive but very, very worth the money. Especially when you take advantage of the 5 year warranty. But then again, you can't put a price on clean and more sanitary carpets in my opinion.

Customer Review: THE DC17 AND THE DC 18 SLIM IS THE PERFECT COMBO
Summary: 5 Stars

Dyson did for Vacuum Cleaners what Toyota did for the Auto Industry years ago. He is the Rock Star of Vacuum Engineers. I owned the DC14 and was totally impressed. Now I have the DC17 and I'm blown away. It's even better at getting out dirt. It also does take out more fuzzy carpet fibers but so far doesn't seem a problem. Maybe that's just what older carpets do--shed.The carpet looks as close to it's original state as I've seen it in years. Since it is a heavier vaccuum, I also bought the DC18 SLIM for stairs and upstairs. Very fun to use. I refer to my new duo as Beauty and the Beast. It's a perfect combo. The DC18 SLIM is highly manueverable and lighter and the other is powerful. Both are the most user friendly vaccuums I've owned. I read most of these on line reviews before I decided. I also subscribe to Consumer Reports online but I didn't even bother to refer to it because I'd rather hear it from those who actually own them. We have each other, we almost don't need Consumer Reports. I especially liked the review of the DC18 Slim by the guy who was horrified at the cloud of dust mites visible thru the streaming sunlight when he pulled back his bedroom curtains in the morning. Made me laugh. Can't we all relate? He went on to say that the DC18 Slim took care of that problem for good. That alone made me want to buy it immediately. I recommend buying both the DC17 and 18 if you can. If not get one this year and the other next year, or if there's only room for one vacuum in your heart and hall closet, chose based on size of your place and traffic plus pet hair etc. If you have a small place, low traffic and hairless pets the SLIM is the one for you. HAPPY VACUUMING!

Customer Review: The pros and the cons
Summary: 5 Stars

Quick history: Two cats (1 long hair, 1 short hair), and a constantly shedding German Shepherd Dog. I have had allergies since I was born (seasonal, dust, cats...). We have nieces/nephews over at least twice a week(2 to 6 at a time), and they are messy. Often go to beach and drag in sand and dirt.

Pros:
(1) Sucks up every piece of dust and hair imaginable.
(2) Can turn off brush and use as 'broom' on hard floors.
(3) Lots of attachments for every use around the house, I love the uphostery one as it gets all the hair off my couch, pillows, bed...
(4) Since the first vacuum experience I have noticed that dust doesn't puff up around and noticeable cleaner air flows back out, does not stir dust in the room.
(5) I vacuum every day, and it still picks up a canister full of hair and dust every two days. YUCK, I swear I'm not dirty.
(6) When in an upright position the hose is on, when not the floor suction is on. So if I run over some string I can turn it off quickly.
(7) The carpet is so clean, I can now feel comfortable walking around without socks (but if I do they no longer get black on the bottom!)
(8) The canister comes off for easy cleaning, make sure to do it though becuase a lot of dust gets stuck in there!

Cons:
(1) Ripped up a strand of carpet (oops), I went over a spot where the carpet was loose.
(2) Be careful on rugs as it is very powerful and can pull loose loop carpets or cheap area rugs.
(3) Although it has an attachment for stairs and the hose extends pretty long, it doesnt extend up the entire flight of high stairs.
(4) Big and clunky, but totally worth it.

Customer Review: I love this vacuum!
Summary: 5 Stars

I had a Dirt Devil dual action that lost suction after having it for a year. I was really skeptical about spending so much money on a vacuum.

I have to say that this vacuum has picked up so much dirt. I have 4 cats and 1 dog and 7 birds. It picked up everything and then some. My carpet has never looked so clean!

The low attachment thing is great. I used to have to move the bird cages or get on my hands and knees. Not anymore. I just put the attachment on and under the cages I go!!

My other vacuum also would shoot the dirt backwards on tile floor. The Dyson picks everything up. I won't ever have to sweep again.

The upholstery brush is big and I like that! My cats sleep on the couch and I have hair all over my couch and I love this attachment.

I've seen reviews about the holes getting plugged. I noticed that mine got plugged up after I stopped vacuuming but you can actually take that top part of the canister off. You just have to have the bottom of the canister open too. Took me a while to figure that out. You don't have to reach in there to clean them. Now I'm not sure it got clogged because they are prone to clogging or because I just stopped vacuuming. If I had started the vacuum again, would the dirt have gone with the rest of the dirt? I'll have to check next time.

The power cord is really long. I really like that.

It's not any heavier than my dirt devil was and it's actually quieter. Not by much but it's quieter.

It also self propels. I thought it was going to take off!

I love this vacuum and I am so glad I made the investment!!
