This is one of the best major purchases we have made! And to top off the great cleaning power of the Dyson we used Amazon Prime and ordered it after 10:00 p.m. last night and it arrived at our door this morning around 8:30 a.m. Great service from Amazon!
General Cleaning
As far as the cleaning power of the Dyson goes - wow, what a difference! We have used a Kenmore Magic Blue vacuum cleaner up until now. It sufficed as a vacuum cleaner. But, my wife said that she nearly used it everyday because it did not totally clean up everything. Specs here and there would either work their way into the carpet or get moved from here to there. Not with the Dyson DC17 Animal - it blows that vacuum cleaner out of the water. The first time we ran it we were surprised, and like many others have stated in their reviews, grossed out. The Dyson picked up anything that we could see plus debris that we never knew was there! Loose carpet fragments, dirt, dust, and hair.
Remanufactured vs. New
I was hesitant to buy refurbished at first because I thought it would be a lot lower quality. That is not the case. If you read up on the subject you will find that Dyson strips the machine down, replaces all the parts necessary, and rebuilds it. They bring it to "like new" condition. The only major difference is the warranty is for something like six months instead of five years. If you can deal with that you can have a basically new vacuum for $200 less than the full price! And, we had no trouble with how it was shipped or it missing manuals like others have reported. They very well may have had trouble - but we did not. No pieces were broken and it came with all the necessary paperwork - including the manual and the registration papers.
Canister vs. Upright / Cleaning Head / Brushbar
Also, choosing an upright vacuum cleaner over a canister makes a difference. The extra weight of the upright presses the cleaning head into the carpet for deeper suction. Generally with a canister vacuum cleaner the suction is dependent upon the effort exerted by the user. But, with this Dyson, extra effort is not needed. The machine automatically adjusts the brush bar and cleaning head so there is no lost suction. The brushbar also agitates the cleaning surface to "beat" the dust out of it. We ran it across our couch cushions and watched them vibrate the whole time. It's like beating a rug with a stick - only multiple times per second.
Save Money / HEPA Filter
As stated on their website - there is a cost savings when buying a Dyson because there is no need to buy bags. And, you simply clean the HEPA filter once every six months - no need to buy one of those either. Because the machine has a HEPA filter your air is cleaner after you vacuum. Instead of expelling dust like other cleaners do it actually produces cleaner air for your home.
Quickdraw Wand / Attachments
Another great feature of the DC17 is the Quickdraw wand. You can be cleaning the floor and then notice a cobweb that needs taken care of. You simply put the machine into the upright position and it switches suction to the wand from the cleaning head. You pull the wand out, go to business, and put it back to continue cleaning the floor. No fuss - no muss.
DC17's Improvements Over DC14
Although the DC14 and DC17 are visually similar - this is one of those cases where you don't want to judge a book by its cover. The DC17 has two major advantages over its older brother DC14: 1) A better cyclone design where 11 cyclones are present instead of 8 and 2) a brushbar that is designed more for American carpets (ones with a deeper pile [deeper carpet]) rather than European.
