We bought the DC17 to upgrade a Hoover we bought for $100 about 7 years ago. At the time we bought it we lived in an apartment with no dogs etc. It is still running but a large house and 2 dogs later, I needed something with some suction to combat pet hair. Well I found in the DC17. I wouldn't call it a miracle worker -- you will still find that some hair that's been engrained in your carpet for years does not magically get sucked up. BUT most of it will. I have noticed my housing staying cleaner, longer and the air quality being better.
Another great thing about the vaccuum is all the attachments. I can vaccuum under my sofa now without moving it! Ditto for the bed. The wand is awesome!
If I was to improve this vaccuum, I would do 2 things -- retractable cord, and make it easier to carry attachments with you as you vaccuum.

I'm impressed with the results. My apt. carpet is 2 1/2 yrs old. Only had an electric broom, so the carpet had not been DEEP vacuumed ever. The nap is back up and it takes several days for footprints to show. My only complaint, so far, is that I don't have a clue as to how to use all the attachments that came with it. Manual is lacking. Took a while to even figure out how to put it together after arrival. Directions are lacking. Wish that instead of a booklet telling how great Mr. Dyson is, they had used that paper to better instruct as to the use of the product.
Don't see a difference between remanufactured and new except the $150. I saved! I don't have a pet, but do have allergies. This appreared to be the same machine as the allergy model. If I decide that I want the matress cleaning attachment, I'll order it. Bet it won't be $150.

Since reading pretty much every review out there on the Dyson, I must say that I was expecting it to be the best vacuum out there and to perform great. After it's first use I must say, it easily surpasses my already high expectations. This thing is for real! A day after vacumming the living room, hallway, and 2 bedrooms with an Oreck XL, I ran across the same area with the Dyson. Amazingly so, it filled up nearly 2 canisters of filth that the Oreck left behind. It;s crazy and kind of gross seeing what this thing can pick up. There were 2 witnesses to this feat and they will both be placing their orders for one soon. I've had experience with Kirby's, Hoover's Windtunnel, Electrolux and the Oreck XL and they all sadly pale in comparison to the Dyson. If your on the fence about buying one of these, don't hesitate. I have had my Dyson DC 17 Animal for over 5 years. It is by far the best vacuum cleaner I have ever owned. Anytime I have had a problem with it I have called customer service and their support is superior to any other. One time it was a broken belt and they mailed me 2 belts which I received the next day. Still have the extra one. When you spend so much on a vacuum cleaner you expect excellence and Dyson delivers. You do have to remember to clean your filter. I neglected to do that and last week purchased one from Amazon. With a dirty, clogged filter the Dysons 'sucking' power isn't as strong as it should be especially if you use any attachments. With this new filter it's as good as new. If you are considering purchasing one of these, don't hesitate. I know it's pricey but I tell you it's worth every penny.Customer Review: The best vacuum

I had read many of the glowing reviews of the reconditioned Animal vacuum which convinced me to give it a try despite my initial reservations to spend money on a product that wasn't brand new. I was very excited waiting for the package to arrive and when it did (promptly) it was like an early Christmas for me. With all this hype I was half expecting to be disappointed in some way in the end - but I've been using it constantly since then and couldn't be happier with the vacuum. It's true that it sucks up everything! I have a black dog and there's no sign of hair anywhere. In the past I would use a big Shop Vac to clean up my sofa sectional which I used to think was adequate - the Dyson Animal puts the Shop Vac to shame.
I'm a little freaked out that I'm so enamored of a vacuum cleaner.
