Overall I am very pleased with this vaccum.
I have carpet only on the stairs. I was looking for a vacuum that would work well on stairs: small and light, yet powerful.
This vacuum is perfect! Just the right size base, perfect weight, and great handle for the stairs.
It also works well on area rugs. I also use it on tile and that works very well as.
There is one thing about it that I don't like.
Changing the filter is very messy. Since the filters are expensive ($15) I re-use them. But getting the dirt out the filter is so so so unpleasant. And very messy. I only do it outside. It also fills up very quickly (because it cleans well?), so emptying them in the winter is extra unpleasant.
Whoever thought that bagless vacs are a good idea is really wrong. I much prefer having a clean little bag I can throw out and pay only a couple bucks for it.
I fill up one $15 filter in a few cleanings, and I have very little carpet and very little dirt overall. So if I was throwing them out every time they fill up it would cost a bundle a year!

I just purchased this about a month ago b/c I got rid of the carpet and went with wood floors. My old vacuum was great with carpet but horrible on tile, wood, or linolium floors. It would "shoot" the items out the back b/c of the brush. This Eureka 431BX is GREAT on hard surface floors. It is also equally as good on the carpet or rugs in the house. It has a option on the bottom side where you can use it on the floor or for use with the hose and attatchments. It also has a button on the top where you can choose to use suction only or suction and brushroll. Suction only is great for use with the hose and let me tell you...this baby will suck anything up! It gets into tight spots because of the design and smallness and it is very lightweight. I am very pleased with the vacuum for the price.
It is not the best vacuum out there, but for the money it is WONDERFUL. Very easy to put together, easy to clean the filter and empty the canister, no problem to store because of the size, and the handle is adjustable for those of us that are shorter.
You wont regret buying this vacuum. I love mine!

This thing is great. I wasn't looking for a top of the line vac, so I had relatively low expectations that this vac far exceeds. My old vac was a little bit more expensive but wasn't picking up all of the hair from my two dogs and the shedding from a new wool area rug that is pretty large. In fact, it was rolling right over the shedding. Looking at how small this is -- and cheap, cute and compact, lightweight, etc, I figured I was taking a huge gamble on it. However, this thing picks up everything I can see and then some the first time I roll over it. I can vacuum repeatedly and it keeps pulling stuff up, even stuff I can't see. It gets all the dog hair. It is a little hard to push so maybe I wouldn't recommend it for a little old lady, but it's OK for me because all I really care about is how well it cleans my carpet. It does leave brushstrokes in the carpet. I have no idea if that is good or bad but it really fluffs it back up. And even my moms $1200 vacuum doesnt seem to have this much suction. I've never had a carpet this clean! I really give it my highest recommendation.Customer Review: THIS VAC SUCKS...LIKE CRAZY!

I'd been eyeing this vacuum for some time, due to it's smallish size and lighter weight, and with hardwood floors I didn't need a monster upright. I also struggle with carpal tunnel and DeQuervain's syndrome, which make gripping difficult and painful. A lighter machine was in order.
I read the great reviews on this little machine and picked one up to try at home. What a shock! This 'little' machine is no lightweight as far as performance is concerned. It literally sucks the dust bunnies up from 6" to 12" away...no kidding! It is very, very powerful and even puts my canister vac to shame. The hose attachment is SO powerful that vacuuming the furniture was actually fun. It is very easy to move, lightweight and the loop handle is the perfect design for comfort.
Some reviewers said that the Optima is hard to push, but I didn't find that to be true. Even with carpal tunnel syndrome, I am able to use it quite easily.
For the price, I don't think you'll find a better, more powerful vacuum.

Doubtful at first but read other reviews. Took a chance, ordered it. Came in just a few days, easy to put together, a breeze to use. Bagless but relatively easy to clean out. Rather than wash filter so far, what I do is, after I shake it out good, I use a compressor nozzle and blow all the extra dust and dirt out of the filter (outdoors of course & keep ypur face out of the way). This seems to do the trick and vacuum works great after each cleanout. Yes it blows the dust bunnies a bit, but I find if I'm patient the bunnies just circle and get sucked right up. It appears to do a good job on my carpets, tile & linoleum. I can't believe the amount of dog hair my lab sheds on a daily basis. Very light. Easy to store.I do need to use an extension cord with it because the cord is only 20' (I just keep it with the vacuum). I now vacuum almost every day. I would definitely recommend this item, esp. if heavy vacuums are a problem. The price makes it very, very affordable. I'm thinking of getting another one for my upstairs
