Tools and Hardware Reviews of Eureka 4870HZ Boss SmartVac Upright Vacuum, BlueCustomer Review: Excellent vacuum with little problem Summary: 4 Stars
I have had this vacuum for 2 and 1/2 years and trust me, it works fantastic if you have pets and the usual kid stuff droppings everywhere. I have had no problems other than me replacing the belt once in about 15 minutes (which broke when my wife ran over a floppy rug with it and let it break by not turning the vacuum off when it got stuck). The foot pedal to move into recline is tough to press when you are not wearing shoes, but I can confirm this is alleviated by no pulling the shaft prior to reclining. It is actually easier to depress if you push the handle forward a bit when pressing the foot pedal.
The reason I am writing this review is to reiterate the previous reviews and confirm this is a great vacuum. I am actually buying another one because my wife recently used it as a wet dry vacuum and soaked the insides. Surprising, it still works after getting out about 2-3 glasses full of water from around the motor housing, but you can smell the burning rubber of something shorting out inside. I guess the point here is to train the user.
Pros: Sucking power, sturdy, attachments, filter, bag
Cons: Belt will break if it gets caught, heavy
Customer Review: Great if you know how to use it Summary: 4 Stars
We've had this vacuum for 4 years now, and for the most part agree with all the positive reviews.
Just a couple of points on the weaknesses of this vacuum:
1. Belt replacement: we've gone through 4 belts or so over the last 4 years, and every single time it was after something had been stuck in the rollers and the vacuum left on for a while. As an engineer, I have to say having all the power from its strong motor going over such a small belt with the result of it generating A LOT of heat when it gets stuck is probably a poor design choice. The thing to do is to shut the vacuum off IMMEDIATELY when something get stuck. Don't wait several seconds. 10 seconds are a looong time when you're a little belt transforming over 1kW of power into heat...
2. The release switch that you step on to switch from storage to floor position - it's only hard to release if it's under tension, i.e. if you're already tilting it back while you're stepping on it. It's not an issue at all if you just step on it while it's still upright and then tilt it.
Just my 2 cents.
Customer Review: Awesome Vacuum! Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased this two years ago after reading all the reviews, and I'm not sorry! When the machine first arrived I found the reviews that the switches were difficult to use to be correct. But now they are not a problem. It'[s almost like it was designed to stand the test of time. When my son first used it he complained .... "{Lazy people! " he said... I said "{what?" .. he replied... "self propelled vacuum!!!!" I had to tell him that it isn't self propelled, it is just so powerful it "drives itself" Some people may like that feature... but it does clean well, and the way iit's designed you dont have to "hook up": the hose, it's already hooked up, just switch from floor to hose and off you go!
I have found that the hose will sometimes (not often, but it's annoying when it happens) fall in middlee of vacuuming. That's a pain to deal with.
I suppose other vacuums will soon have the suction power of this baby, with better controls and storage, but for now, this one gets my vote on it's price and power!
Customer Review: Has worked great for years! Summary: 4 Stars
We have had a 4870D for something like 5 years now, and generally have been very pleased. Reading these complaints about the belts and rollers baffle me. Our belt has been replaced *once* in all these years, and the roller/brush not at all. I don't know what these people are getting on their floors that they are destroying these parts on a regular basis. Very odd! We have a fairly large house that is nearly all carpeted, and we have had two dogs and now have three cats. This vacuum has always gotten the carpets very clean. Another positive is the noise level, as it is much quieter than many vacs. Main negative that keeps me from giving it 5 stars is that the "switch" to stop the brush is very hard to use--stupid, mechanical design. However, we have not found it necessary to even use it when vacuuming the tiled kitchen, etc. I will also note that the HEPA filters are not cheap, and must be changed a couple of times a year, or the performance will degrade significantly. Still, highly recommended by me.
Customer Review: sucks in a good way Summary: 4 Stars
This is a good, not outstanding, vacuum. Not much I can add to what has been said. It definitely is heavy - I am a big guy, so I wasn't too worried about weight, but I did notice it was way heavier than my previous vacuum. Suction is good, I like the "Power Paw" for cat hair. Some of the plastics, like the foot-activated release lever that allows the handle to tilt, feel pretty cheap. I guess that is what you get at this price point - and nothing has broken or seems in danger of doing so. It has lots of features, which is good but can sometimes feel fussy. I particularly like the switch for choosing between normal vacuuming and using the wand. My last vacuum did not have this, so the beater bar ran even while you were wanding, and it decreased the efficiency of the normal vacuum suction.
Bottom line: effective and versatile vacuum, albeit a bit heavy and clunky.
