Tools and Hardware Reviews of Black Hole Rodent TrapCustomer Review: Great Gopher Trap Summary: 5 Stars
I have used the Black Hole Gopher Trap before. One of my previous traps just wore out from use. The trigger inside the trap just got brittle and broke. I really like the traps. Two years ago I used them to catch 50 gophers in my back yard -- There was a new housing development that went in and all the gophers headed for existing yards. The traps did a great job. I found that by rubbing lemon around the small hole or even leaving a small slice of lemon in the hole, I had a lot more success in trapping the gophers.
I have tried the metal traps that go in the gopher tunnels, but was only successful 1 out 10 sets. With the Black Hole I was successful on 8 of 10 sets. Every now and then I just had a gopher that would not be caught. The gopher would push just enough dirt into the trap to close the hole to the run, but not enough to set off the trap. This was when the lemon slice would be necessary.
I had to buy more traps because my daughter borrowed mine and had so much success with it that she wanted to keep it on hand just in case another gopher came into her yard.
Customer Review: Almost wish I had more gophers to catch! Summary: 5 Stars
I moved into a house owned by Cal Trans that had been vacant for 3 years, surrounded by fields with more gopher holes than solid ground. I wanted to build a beautiful garden, but knew I first had to get rid of the little darlings. Since I wanted to plant a vegetable garden (and have 3 little terriers) poison wasn't an option. I tried all the traps in the local hardware stores, nada. Tried flooding them, but the tunnels were so extensive, they had plenty of places to hide.
Then I read about the Black Hold in a gardening book. I caught 6 gophers in the next 7 days. Unbelievable! Of course, I'd pull the trap out of the ground and one of my dogs immediately grabbed it and tried to take credit for the kill.
Occasionally another gopher tries to move in, but I've got him within 24 hours.
Now my biggest problem is watering my garden, the water runs down all those old gopher tunnels....
Customer Review: These traps ROCK! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought 3 of these during the winter 08/09 and finally put them out. We have had an increasing problem with voles, eating small tree roots, irises, everything in my garden etc etc the past 3-4 years. I have tried just about every kind of trap, smoke bombs (kind of fun, but no boom) with no success until these.
My wife is ahead of me, 6 to 4 on voles eliminated, in just the past couple of weeks.
These traps rely on the psychology of the critter (what little there is for a vole) in that there is a small opening at the end that MUST be filled in to close out the light/air/water/predators etc from it's tunnel - stick it's little head in and so much for the vole.
I can't recommend these more highly - they work and are well built - the only problem is that they are black, and easy to loose in high grass. I tied bright surveyor tape on to make them easier to find.
Customer Review: Rodent's Demise Summary: 5 Stars
I was on the way back from setting the fourth trap, about 80 ft from where I set the third one. I checked the third trap and it was sprung. I thought something had gone wrong. I pulled it out of the ground and there in a trap that had not been in the ground for five minutes was a rat-sized rodent that had avoided the poisoned bait set by the pros. I dug a little hole. Turned the trap white-end down, depressed the spring, and dumped dead rattie in the hole. Maybe the rest won't be so easy, but I am amazed at how easy this one was. And I am happy that I never have to touch any of the surfaces touched by the rodent.
One of four traps needed a slight adjustment to get the trip mechanism to stay cocked, but otherwise, this an ideal rodent-killing machine. I see the world beating a path to this product page.
Customer Review: A Garden Saver Summary: 5 Stars
This is, without question, the *finest* gopher trap available. The gophers appeared in my yard during my first deployment to Iraq, where I was powerless to do anything about their depredations. Upon my return I tried everything: bubble gum, crystallized fox urine, EasySet(TM) gopher traps, smoke bombs, CO, poison, rifle fire... nada. At best it was hit or miss and the flowers/trees continued to be consumed. I read the reviews of the Black Hole Rodent Trap, here on Amazon, with a jaundiced eye. Still, I was at the end of my rope. Well, no exaggeration, these things catch gophers- fast! I had one out for less than 24 hours and bang! dead gopher. And unlike the EasySet trap, it's easy to extract the gopher. My foxes love the free snacks too....
