Tools and Hardware Reviews of Flowbee Haircutting SystemCustomer Review: works as adveristed Summary: 5 Stars
This is one of the few things that is worth buying from those TV infomercial. I saw this when I was a kid and didn't think much of it. A couple of years ago I asked some friends about it and they thought it was a joke. I got layed-off and am in the buy thing that will pay for itself later. I got the free phone service when I bought Ooma, it works well. Now I just got this and can say it works as advertised.
I actually got it straight from Flowbee for the same price here but with the mini vacuum. This thing is so noisy, so I had to use ear-plugs. It is constructed very simple and well. The spacers are a little cheap but they gave you two sets. I fitted this to my regular vacuum cleaner and it fitted well, but the Flowbee vacuum was the same price so it was worth it. There is not much to how to use this, it is really common sense and oil the blade once in a while to keep it sharp. You don't even need to shower after a haircut.
The Cut
I thought my haircut was overall good. I can't really complain. I cut short on the side and back, and keep it medium to long on the top. There is some area where the Flowbee missed, but it the way you cut it. I went side to side on the side and back and it didn't pick up the little flap on the top back, but I probably can pick it up cutting from the top. It took me like 30mins to finish my first cut. It didn't suck up all my hair on the first couple of pass.
My hair type is thick straight Asian hair with less density then most people. I think this is a great product and recommend it for a quick trim and a consistence look. I will go to the barber maybe 2x a year just to clean some stuff up and trimming. Otherwise the Flowbee has stolen me away from my barber.
Customer Review: an EVEN haircut, at last! Summary: 5 Stars
I just got my Flowbee last night--arrived on time--and after agonizing over trying it, I just finished my first Flowbee haircut. OMG! I'm a beautician! I could actually get rich cutting hair with this gadget! I have naturally wavy/loosely curled hair, and have been fuming for the past several years about so regularly getting visibly uneven cuts, even though I pay around $[...] a pop with tip included. I cut the top 3 1/2 inches, the middle 3 inches, and the bottom 2 1/2 inches and it looks and feels so much better than what I was getting at the solon. Lays well, and isn't bushy on the sides. I think it may be a bit too long yet right in the middle to the bottom of the back, but I'll have to "wear" it awhile to see. If so, I could just shorten those areas 1/4 inch next time and that should do it. I, too, like other reviewers, had been told that I had "problem" hair by salon operators--cowlicks, stubborn grey hair, etc.--but now I know the problem really was just a poor cut like I thought. And, get this, I had tried practically every operator in the salon, and it is a well regarded national chain. I'm glad I finally got disgusted enough to buy this--it is well worth the price and more. Get yours at [...], though (sorry, Amazon, you're still a favorite, just not for this) as mine was about $[...] total, but I didn't get the mini vac. My Rainbow sweeper hooked up just fine to it, and since with a Rainbow, you start with an empty vac container every time, it will be perfect for use with my Flowbee. Drat the negative hype over the TV ad, because if it weren't for that, I would have had one of these long ago. I'm going to oil it regularly and take very good care of it because I want it to last a long, long time!
Customer Review: Great item for busy moms - save money on the kids! Summary: 5 Stars
I bought a Flowbee when my oldest son was about 3 years old, hoping to save money on haircuts for him. Little kids don't care about having a hip 'do', so why not? It worked great and gave him a standard layered cut, there are different attachments for different lengths. All you have to do is trim up the edges with scissors or a hair clipper/shaver, which is pretty easy to master after the first few times.
I'm currently without one - it got lost in my last move. But I'm seriously considering getting another because my youngest is now 3 years old and he's very wiggly during haircuts. The Flowbee is also great for kid cuts because you don't risk messing up when they move - the attachment ensures an even cut with no mistakes. It's also nice to know that the vacuum can't jab your little one like sharp scissors can. The only problem is my husband makes fun of it and refuses to have his hair 'vacuumed', even though he gets his hair done in a basic layered style. So there's definitely a stigma to overcome for some people.
I have tried it on several other people (adults) and they all enjoyed it - the vacuum creates a nice breezy effect that feels good. I used it on a couple of men who had scalp problems that caused them embarrassment at the salon and they loved it. One of them even bought his own so he could avoid going to the salon and being humiliated by uppity stylists about his scalp. So if you are more concerned about saving money and don't have a problem with the concept then this is the product for you. It could also be helpful for people who feel uncomfortable going to a salon and want a do-it-yourself option that can give professional looking results.
Customer Review: I Can't Believe This Thing Works! Summary: 5 Stars
OK, I'll admit it: I'm a priss regarding hair. My husband has been wanting a FlowBee for *years*, citing his displeasure at having to go to *my* salon (all female). We live in a small town, so good hair cuts are hard to come by!
I kept telling him "No way. Please don't get a FlowBee." I had visions of him hacking up his hair (I thought his scissor attempts were a preview of what he'd do with a FlowBee)--or looking like Moe from the 3 Stooges or other nightmare scenario. And, of course, see him ending up at the hair salon to fix his mess...
Well, we ordered the FlowBee on December 3rd, and it came today--Dec. 6th. I knew my husband was anxious to use it, even though it was a Christmas present. I encouraged him to try it out, even though it wasn't Christmas.
I've just come from upstairs, where he finished his first FlowBee haircut. I am *totally* bowled over that his haircut looks as good as, or better, than salon cuts. I can't believe he achieved a layered affect in the back! I busted out laughing because I was so surprised!
Right now, there is a loud whine coming from upstairs (yes, this baby isn't quiet considering it's hooked up to your vacuum), because I asked my husband to cut our 6 year old son's hair. (I almost can't believe this is happening...)
I teased my husband for *years* because he wanted a FlowBee. He said "This year, I want one for Christmas."
I have to say, I am very pleased with this purchase. If he cuts his hair every month, as well as our son's, the FlowBee will be saving us at *least* $25 a month. This means that the FlowBee will pay for itself in *two* months. Amazing!
Customer Review: Has saved me quite a bit of cash over the past 2 years Summary: 5 Stars
If you're not tremendously uptight about your hair, then this thing is great! Even saying that, no one every realizes that I cut my hair myself. They just say, "You get a haircut? It looks good." like they always have.
When I got it, I paid around $75 for it. I figured if it would last me 6 haircuts, then it would pay for itself. I was spending about $13 every 6 weeks or so. Figuring that it's kept me from going for about 16 haircuts now and about 8 for my son, that's $312 worth of haircuts for $75....not bad. And it's still running great, so who knows how much I'll save in the long run.
Well almost 2 years later, lots of haircuts for my son and me, and it's still going strong. It takes a little practice...the up and down movement, figuring out which guard length is needed, etc. But it has easily been worth it for us. I have 15 month old twin boys now that I'll be able to start using it on soon too which will save even more in haircuts.
My tips would be:
1. Make sure your hair is clean when using it. Damp is good too...not soaked.
2. Make sure your vacuum has good suction. I thought the Flowbee was broken because it wasn't cutting well once but it turned out that the vacuum bag was full. Switched it out and it was fine.
3. Remember to oil the blades before each use to keep them in good shape with the oil provided.
4. Don't step on the tube! ;)
5. You'll still need someone to trim up the back for you. My wife does it for me with a regular pair of scissors.
Anyway, easily worth the purchase price and when the one I have eventually dies, I'll pick up another one right away.
