Tools and Hardware Reviews of First Alert PIR720RN Motion Sensing Light Socket

Customer Review: Awesome product!
Summary: 5 Stars

No more broken lamp chains, forgetting to turn off the lights, in short -- extremely useful product! I had some of the same problems mentioned, the wife keep bugging me on why it only seemed to turn on when she was standing directly under it in the closet. Of course I didn't read the instructions, I just unboxed it and screwed it in.

To those having problems -- there are 2 arrows on the bottom, one of these are supposed to face your entry door or the area you want turning on from the approached direction, the detection field is not circular, but is extremely elongated. It's in the instruction book I actually read with my second of these detectors.

I have 3 of these now, and all perform brilliantly in the closets they are in.

It has to be people or kid sized. Cats won't turn it on, even multiple cats playing on the floor or on the dryer. I don't know about large dogs, I don't have one.

The bonus is that now I'm not strangled by the chains as I walk by. And I never have to go back and check to see if I turned off the light.

Customer Review: This has to be the best for in-home use.
Summary: 5 Stars

I've used this product for several years now. I have one in my garage and in a small area under the house stairs. Under the stairs is where my well water pressure tank is located and some space that we use for storage. The people who built this house put a light socket in an almost inaccessible area and it was a real pain to turn the light on and off due to the low ceiling. But with this product, all you have to do is open the door and it senses your motion and the light comes on. Great. I also have it in the garage so when we use the side entrance we don't have to flub for the light switch. What is really great here is that it senses 180 degrees so it comes on from both entrances, which are at different ends of the garage. They do last a long time, though one of the two stopped working after we had the lights go off and on several times during a storm. So I ran out and got another one. Great product, easy to use.

Customer Review: Excellent Purchase!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I purchased three of these and have been using them for a year now on a daily basis, multiple times a day.

They are excellent for entrances, hallways, etc. as the new Compact Fluorescent Bulbs (CFLs) should be left on for at least 15 minutes once turned on before being turned off or else the bulb life is shortened (that's why incandescent are still very useful for quick on/off operations).

I mainly use CFLs in the house but use incandescent bulbs with these. THEY ONLY WORK WITH CONVENTIONAL INCANDESCENT BULBS(but it's not a major problem since they automatically shut off after 4 minutes)

The model in particular is very nice because it silent on/off (other generic models make a minor "click" notice every time they turn on and off).

Also, compared to other generic models, the SENSORS ON THESE ARE VERY PRECISE.

It is well-worth the money. Highly recommended!!

Customer Review: So far, so good
Summary: 5 Stars

I installed one of these in a closet with a pullchain switched socket which my mother could not reach, and it has worked great so far. Even at $25 it is a great deal considering installing a simple wall mounted manual switch would probably cost just as much in material, plus at least a couple of hours labor installing it, without the advantage of having it motion controlled.
The only concern I have is with all the reviews that say the electronics in the unit get fried when the lightbulb burns out. If this is the case then it seems like First Alert should advise you to put a brand new bulb in to begin with and maybe change the bulb twice a year or so, as this would be much cheaper than buying a new motion sensor. I intend to contact First Alert (1-800-323-9005) to see if this is a manufacturing problem, and whether the 3 year warranty will cover it.

Customer Review: Let There Be Light!
Summary: 5 Stars

This was just what we were looking for, and a much needed investment. We use it in a small bathroom which has no outlets or light switches. As stated in reviews by others, it is necessary to mount it upside down. We did have to remove the glass cover for our light in order to do this. It works well, though, because the children can now use the bathroom without needing adult assistance to turn on the light. It stays on for a period of about 4 minutes, and then turns itself off. We do need to keep the door closed most of the way to prevent it from turning on unnecessarily due to motion outside the room (when people walk past the bathroom via the hallway). We've used ours for about 3 months now, and it works just great!
