A check of online comparisons had given the First Alert SA302CN battery-powered smoke and fire alarm high marks, and so far I haven't been disappointed.
The unit is of very sturdy construction (especially the cover hinge and latch) and was easy to install, and inserting the battery involved none of the often-encountered hassles of trying to properly line up the terminals in a flimsy bracket tucked behind the sensor unit--a twist of the wrist rotates the unit off its mounting plate, and the battery slips into a carrier that then flips into place to make the proper connection, which is confirmed by a short 'beep' signal. Once the unit is back on its base plate, the red light indicating that the unit is operating properly is easily visible.
This is easily the best smoke detector that I have ever purchased.

The key for optimum function is to place it in an ideal and strategic location (away from TV and players that use remotes) and not too close to the oven. I would recommend a 10 year Lithium battery and monthly tests for added insurance and peace-of-mind.
Small homes may need only one or two of these and larger homes likely one for each room.

This alarm works great. Easy to install. Has a battery door that makes battery change simple. You don't have to take the unit off the wall. Even has a pen to lock the battery door if you don't want anyone removing the battery. Some have complained about false alarms and problems with their TV remote setting off the test mode. I have had no such problems. Never had a false alarm. My unit is down the hall about 10 feet from the living room and the remote has never set it off. That might not be the case if you use it in the same room as the TV. This is probably the best dual sensor alarm available for the money. If you want the most protection, get a dual sensor.Customer Review: WORKS WELL

I bought this particular smoke alarm because on line info indicates that dual technology alarms are the most reliable when it comes to detecting a hazard. I couldn't find any dual technology smoke alarms at the local home improvement centers so I ordered on line. The product was shipped on time and was received in good condition. It is easy to install and although the remote control ability is a nice feature (and it works) for those who will mount this alarm in an inaccessible location, I really don't need this feature because I can easily reach the buttons. I am happy with this purchase and plan to buy several more.Customer Review: Product works well after six months of use

I installed three of the First Alert SA302CN Double Sensor Alarms in May 2010 - one on each floor of my home. Installation was very easy and operation has been without a problem, e.g. no false alarms. The remote control test feature is very convenient and allows me to quickly test all three each week without getting a step stool or chair to reach the unit. I have had no false triggers of the test function even though one alarm is within 10 feet of a TV with remote control.
An update in November 2010 - six months after purchase all the alarms are working well with no problems, no false alarms!
