I am a career Firefighter/Paramedic and having a combination Photoelectric/Ionization smoke detector is a MUST have. Why ? Most fires that kill people are smoldering fires in which the SMOKE, not the fire, kills you while sleeping. Colorless, odorless carbon monoxide can quickly overcome you and knock you unconscious. By the time the flames come at you, you are pretty much already dead. Regular cheap ionization detectors only detect flaming fire. Photoelectric detects the SMOKE...which is the real culprit. Having a combination detector such as this First Alert model is PRICELESS. Stay safe people !Customer Review: Test and reset with any remote! Say What! Awesome.

First Alert Ultimate Series Battery-Powered Smoke Alarm #SA302CN
I purchased this product after watching it tested on TV along with other brands. It was the first one to sound. Although I had recently purchased another brand, I felt uncertain when a grease splatter caused smoke and it did not sound. I feel confident knowing that this product is very highly recommended by the experts.

This thing is very sensitive. It is above a door near the exit in our kitchen. It went off when I was making toast nearby. It goes off when we cook too, so I pulled it down and put it in the closet. Had I put it in another room, I'm sure it would be great. I mounted it there because I was replacing another smoke detector that was there when we bought the house and the previous owners painted around it. I highly recommend it, especially near the bedrooms, I am sure it is great.Customer Review: Quality Product

My existing detectors were over ten years old. It was time to replace. I did some research through a consumer product evaluation company. I am very pleased with the product. It was easy to install , looks good and the battery is very easy to replace. I plan on purchasing more for a another home I have. I do not have anything that produces carbon monoxide so I did not need that feature in a detector.
