I liked that these alarms have both the smoke and CO alarms, and are well-rated by Consumer Reports. One alarm that was in a hallway outside a bathroom did tend to go off a lot due to the humidity, but that was a poor location. So far, thank God, I haven't tested them in a real world fire or CO leak!
I also like that they are linked. Setup was pretty straightforward (but do it while your dog is out of the house!). I own a duplex and live in one half, so I want to know if my tenant next door is burning down the other half of the place! (The recorded messages don't have "tenant" so I used "guest bedroom." If they set theirs off by humidity or cooking, I hear about it, which is the only downside.)
I was initially concerned about where to detect CO. I assumed it settled along the bottom of the floor, like natural gas or chlorine. But I have since learned that it CO has the same density as air, but during combustion the gases are hot so they rise to the ceiling (just like smoke rises until it cools). Hence a location near the ceiling is the best location.
I've had these First Alerts for 16 months now, and the batteries are still good (I tested them with a ohmmeter, but I'll be replacing them soon just to be safe).
The silence button is nice, but I made labels and pasted them on the covers, that say, "HOLD FOR FIVE SECONDS TO SILENCE ALARM." People in real life tend to push the button and nothing happens, so then they take a hammer and destroy it to shut it up! First Alert would do well to provide the "FIVE SECOND" instruction on their labels, readable from a distance. Too many people have died because they had thrown out their smoke detectors while cooking.
