Tools and Hardware Reviews of GE AccessPoint 001859 Stor-A-Key Locking Key Case, Gray

Customer Review: Good design, bad quality material
Summary: 3 Stars

I bought this key holder back in '08 to serve as a "hidden bumper key" on my car. I liked that it provided some measure of "security" over the other plain bumper key holders. That being said, this thing won't keep out the truly determined. It's made from a hard plastic, and it doesn't look like it would take much to smash it open, if someone really wanted to.

I wouldn't trust this thing as a critical or plain-sight backup (like a house key). But as an infrequent or hidden holder, this is perfectly fine.

(SIDE NOTE: If you are the kind to hide keys on your car, and your car has a immobilizer system (chip/fob in the key), might I suggest that you make a "dummy" key? A "dummy" key doesn't have the fancy chip installed; it's just a plain key (any key manufacturer can make one for you for cheap). This allows you to open the doors, but not start the engine. The beauty is, the dummy key sets off the car alarm when the door is opened, so you can be made alert if someone tries to break in with it.)

Customer Review: OK, not bad, useful, inexpensive, but could be improved...
Summary: 3 Stars

I "installed" this key case today to hide a set of house keys and it definitely can be utilized to hide a key or keys effectively and safely for use in an emergency. I used the enclosed steel plate to mount it in a place around my house that it would be virtually impossible for someone to find. So, it serves the purpose as intended. But as other reviewers have pointed out, this is really cheaply made and it looks as if you could force it open without any tools whatsoever. I don't want to waste my money by destroying it just to prove a point, but it could have been constructed to be sturdier. Overall, it suits the purpose if you can find a suitable place to mount it and hide it, but GE could have done a better job with design and construction.

Customer Review: Awesome idea, except it's pretty flimsy and a car key doesn't fit in the case
Summary: 3 Stars

This is a great idea. Unfortunately, the case is made out of plastic. Though I did not test it's strength, it seemed like someone with a large rock could liberate the contents. The other issue I found was my Honda ignition valet key was too long to fit in the case. I'm really not sure what product testing folks wouldn't have tried to put a key in a key lock box, but there you have it. Personally, I mutilated my key by snipping off the back part of the plastic handle (where the hole is to be put on a key chain), so that it would fit, because I'd rather have a key that works attached to my car in the event that I need one. If the team could create a metal version that's 1cm longer, this would be awesome.

Customer Review: It's ok but...
Summary: 3 Stars

The item is as described but, I question it's strength should someone try to break into it.

Customer Review: great idea, faulty design
Summary: 2 Stars

I used this for a couple of years, knowing that it was more of a psychological deterrent, because the case could obviously be busted open if someone wanted in my car badly enough. This was proven when the combination lock quit working, and I had to break into it to retrieve my key. Also, for my key to fit into it initially, I had to saw off the top part of it.
