The Gerber 01471 Multi-Tool has all the essential tools that I need for quick daily tasks that don't require the big toolbox. It is well made, solid, using high quality steel for blade and tools. It is certainly not designed for small hands, in particular the pliers - that's exactly why I bought it. The screwdrivers, both blade and Philips, are constructed of high quality steel and have already held up to some heavy jobs. One of the decisive reasons for my purchase was Gerber's blade and tool lock mechanism - it works and makes this tool much safer than others in my arsenal. Highly recommended, in particular for the sale price. I am thinking about buying a few more as gifts for my handy relatives - the ones with big hands :)Customer Review: A solid tool

This tool is comfortably large and more than adequately sturdy as you're using it, and folds remarkably compactly, although it remains a heavy and somwhat bulky object to keep at your hip (as I do). The compact folded position, features such as printed diagrams of blades and well-spaced tabs, and a mechanism that locks tools in place when folded out are all features of a strong well thought-out design with all the attention to detail one hopes for in a complex tool.
The selection of included tools is large and versatile, such that I'm comfortable saying that anything you can't manage with this you should really be carrying a separate tool for anyway.

I bought the Gerber Suspension as a replacement for one that was confiscated when I was traveling through an airport (...my fault for not realizing it was in my back pack). In any case, the Suspension works just as the earlier one did and I think in many ways is more user friendly than a comparable Leatherman.
The only thing I liked less about the new Suspension is that it did not come with the accessory tool kit (drive attachment and 10 bits), so I had to buy that separately. Also, the case is somewhat smaller, so the accessory tool kit has to be stored in a separate pouch.
I would buy again, and the price was right from Amazon.

I had an old, large, Gerber tool that ended up in the wastebin at a TSA checkpoint on the way home from a sailing vacation. The price of, well, nevermind. Amazon had this one and I'd given a few to nephews for Christmas (from REI) and had heard no complaints.
It is indeed lightweight and has a much simpler tool lock/unlock system than the old one. As many have commented, the knives are not very long and the Phillips driver is a bit abbreviated. However the knives do work and the screwdriver was adequate to adjust the gooseneck on an old sailboat mast. Even the silly-looking scissors do work for small tasks.

I picked this Gerber up the other day and have been very impressed. I used to have the Leatherman Ultra tool and it was great for years but after losing it, I went to get another Leatherman and saw this Gerber for substantially less money. I gave it a shot have have been impressed. I am glad that Gerber has refreshed their design in the past years. I remember their old spring-loaded models back when I was in the Army in the 90s and they were always breaking or getting clogged with mud, etc. This is a nice design and for under $30, you can't beat it.
