Tools and Hardware Reviews of Gerber 22-01629 LMF II Black Infantry Knife with 4.8-Inch BladeCustomer Review: Great knife - excellent balance/grip, nice price Summary: 5 Stars
I'm not a survivalist type by any means. This knife was purchased for some recreational camping and some boring yard work. That said, it's a great knife. The balance is exceptional and the grip beats some of the more expensive knives that I own. My hands tends to perspire easily so I appreciate that it feels glued to my palm.
It's a little smaller than I expected so not ideal for clearing branches (for that, a kukri or inexpensive machete works much better), but it feels so comfortable that I use it anyway. It holds an edge well and is not too difficult to sharpen. The integrated sharpener does help, but I still prefer a good whetstone or a diamond bar.
I've been using it to clear up some yard waste recently. It's heavy enough that I don't worry about attacking some 1" saplings with it. As mentioned, it's not ideal for clearing brush but is absolutely perfect for coconuts :D. I don't see myself egressing from an aircraft anytime soon, but the pommel works ideally on cocunuts. It also slices right through ropes I was using to bundle up leaves.
My only reservation is the sheath. It's quite rugged, but also quite bulky. Luckily, the sheath can be disassembled somewhat so can attach via velcro straps to a good utility belt. I prefer to keep mine horizontally mounted anyway, so that works out.
My usual workhorse knife is a very inexpensive Buck that can be had for $20. This one has replaced it, and is an exceptional value.
Customer Review: excellent knife and customer service Summary: 5 Stars
Best knife I've ever owned.
I just got back from about 40 days on the road and the wild, and before that I used it overseas. This is the best knife, it feels great, the handle is amazing - the sheath has MOLLE straps and a drop legs. It's secure and it's tough. I;ve used it from everything to gutting fish, to spear fishing, to sharpening wood, cutting wires, cutting aluminum cans.
I broke one of the drop leg clips by slamming it on the back door of the jeep and I told gerber about it and how could i buy a new one - heck they just sent me a whole new sheath because they are good guys and I would buy from gerber over and over. I happen to really like the sheath a lot. It stays on when you are running thru any environment - trust me a loser sheath, you'd run a mile and look down and wonder where your knife went. You can hand upside down and know that your knife is with you at all times.
Watch your knife! People would snarf this from you in a minute. It's a beauty - but more importantly - it helped me survive some tough spots here and abroad and it's still going - I also wouldn't cut wood with it, so my black finish is still pretty decent even after cutting cans.
PS: Seems like you should only chop wood logs with this in an emergency - sounds like a recipe for failure - find a axe or saw - but certainly it's been excellent with wood for me for getting my needs for a modest fire, or sharpening sticks.
Customer Review: A very good knife -- just right size Summary: 5 Stars
I laugh when I see people carrying 12 inch (or larger) knives out in the wilderness, because those knives are just too big to do the things you need done -- cut rope for a shelter, whittle branches for a trap, clean a fish, etc. The problem with going with a thin knife is that the blade will just not hold up to abuse (e.g. hammering it into a small sapling or shaving off the bark of a cedar tree).
That's where the LMF II fits in nicely. It's very sturdy, holds (and takes) a sharp edge, and is small enough to keep you from accidentally cutting your hand off.
My only complaint with the LMF II is the sheath. It's designed to stick to a Molex vest (think velcro) or strap to your calf. You can put the knife on a regular belt, but you have to get a small cord to tie it around your thigh, because the straps that come with the sheat are too large (they'll chafe your legs). I'd love to see this knife come with a custom fit leather sheath. Otherwise, great knife. Definitely get one, you won't be disappointed.

Customer Review: perfect everything knife Summary: 5 Stars
the knife is a great knife. works as described. only issues with the knife is the simple fact that the velcro at the bottom just doesnt hold well after a lil over a year, and the combination of sand and overuse doesnt help. my solution to this was to simply wrap 550 paracord through the holes in some sort of decorative design, yet allowing enough slack in the back so that you can lift up on the webbing to access the sharpener. for the leg straps, i pretty much found them useless to me and just hook it up to the molle gear assembly for my backpack and that gives me the easy access as a ka-bar. another issue is it takes a bit of breaking to remove the tool with ease. it kind of sticks in the sheath. A GREAT SAFETY FEATURE, but not really acceptable to the persons who want convenience while unsheathing. this is a great knife and i am sure that gerber is going to make something that is even better. they always do. but for the time being, for a sheath knife that will hold up no matter what you put it through, this is the perfect buy. (make sure you research the areas where you buy it. if you do not buy from this site, many stores will inflate the price) i am military and have been issued this knife for combat in the desert. i have seen it for as low as 50.00 and as high as 130.
Customer Review: Excellent Knife Summary: 5 Stars
Got this knife about a year ago for around $60 on amazon. Excellent steel on the knife, and the grip is very comfortable in the hand. The knife is a tad bit bigger than i had anticipated, but only by about a few inches (I checked the dimensions just didn't visualize the blade length). The steel point on the end is very good, and certainly gets the job done. I did some "field" work with it. Our Fire Training class had a demo where we brought in a car to practice "victim extrication". Using the knife, I slashed a tire to stabilize the vehicle. The knife did this task rather easily. I also used the steel point on the bottom to smash both the side and rear window of the Oldsmobile vehicle. The point did this with ease. I then slashed the seatbelts with it, which ended up cutting better than several "seat-belt cutters" our class had. This series of tests really proved to me what the knife was capable of.
I would say that my only complaints are that:
1.The steel point on the end rusts rather easily.
2. The paint coating on the blade does not block rust very well.
3. The serrations are cut so thin that they tend to break upon tougher tasks like cutting plastic.
All in all a great knife. Thanks for reading my review.
