This knife come out of the box sharpened. Gerber provides superb quality, so much that when you just lay the knife on you hand it readily begins to sink in and cut, so as caution BE CAREFUL, for those not use to such good quality.the blade is not too long, more so perfect in length. The knife fits the holster perfect. The straps (security straps that surround the butt of the knife while in holster) are a bit tight to connect but that actually comes as a security benefit. also the leg straps are of great quality as well, they come with rubber LACED into the straps (to prevent the knife holster from moving while in action)) not just melted to the surface, so they won't come apart when they are worn. all of the material is sewn together with high quality stitching so there is no worry of it coming apart under stress.Customer Review: Well made

I got this as sort of a birthday present. I selected it because of a long list of great experiences with gerber. It took some research because I've good experiences with KABAR and CRKT as well. However, I don't regret this knife. Starting with just the knife, it is everything the description says, but they really don't describe the quality of the material, the fit and finish of the handle and angle of the grind. The sheath is also well made and can be mounted in almost any manor imagineable. The only down side I really found was the coating on the blade. It scrapes very easy and having it in a lansky sharpening kit does cause scratches to it, but I oil my blades anyway to keep them from rusting. Becuase stainless steel can RUST!
Overall another excellent piece of equipment from gerber.

I buy knives to use, not to brag about. I am not in the military and will never be. The person who said "Its a tool" understands what a knife is. If that rubs you the wrong way.....buy a chainsaw.....you are not Bear Grylls or Survivorman....that is the only "Internet Hype" here.....you buy a knife because you use it and it serves a purpose as a "tool" to do a job, NOTHING ELSE. Deer camp is the "proving ground" for all knives, not your back yard or shelf. I bought this knife over a year ago and it served me well at Bow Camp, Gun Season Camp, Black Powder Camp and even Turkey Season......if the finish scratches....so what? If the serrations are on the "wrong" side....you are not using it as a tool......and..omg if it rattles in the sheath....you have never been in any place nonfictional.Customer Review: Great knife...

This is an amazing knife. I got my first use on a hike in the Smoky Mountains a couple weeks ago. The factory edge was sharp, the sheath is great and the knife is as tough as nails. I've seen some reviews that said the grip didn't fit larger hands. I'm 6'5" and wear XXL gloves and the grip is no problem at all. The material the grip is made out of held onto my hand even when wet from the snow.
The only negative, if I could call it that, is how tight the knife sits in the sheath. However, since this knife was first designed to be a downed airman's survival knife it had to withstand some unreal G-force and not come out.
If you are looking for a tough knife to use for hiking/camping/survival you've found it. Gotta love the folks at Gerber.

I was looking for a great military style knife and every bit of research I did pointed right at the Gerber LMF II. Because I collect many different styles of knives, this fits the bill if you want a military/ survival type knife that will hold up to anything you put it through. Arrived very sharp, although I ran it through my ceramic sharpener and could now easily shave with it if so desired. And apparently, everyone that buys this knife feels the same as I do. Great product, extremely well made and high-tech looking. You can't go wrong with this Gerber.
You may want to check your local and state laws prior to ordering this knife. It's not a pocket knife and could potentially get you into hot water in the wrong situation.
