The replacement filters aren't available which really is a problem. The machine is great when it is new but. . . The lack of a turn-off when empty is another thing that should be fixed but I can work around that. What can I do about the non-availability of filters? We've been using the humidifier for 2 years now (on the same cartridge) and it's still going strong! This is our first humidifier so I don't have anything to compare it to, but my friend had one (don't know the brand) with a nightlight on it and it barely put out any moisture when her son had croup. I ran this one over and she fell in love with it and bought one the next day! Yes, there is a smell in the room after a night of being used with the door closed, but I just assumed it was from the dampness. All in all, I love my humidifier! I have been through so many humidifiers trying to find a good one. This one did some of the stuff that others have complained about. I took all the flitering junk out of it and it works just fine... no stink... just a fine mist. I turn it on a somewhat low output as I am using it for one room only. Good output of cool mist, but daily upkeep, filter changes, is a pain. It gets stinky if you don't change the filter frequently. Also, the instructions say not to leave the unit running while empty--so why didn't the manufacturer make it shut off automatically, as other models do??? Overall, I prefer the Honeywell warm mist humidifiers with built in humidistat--easier to maintain, auto shut off.Digital camera Review: humidifier works well however the smell is awful

The humidifier works well, it's very quiet. I bought this last year and when I took it out this winter to use it, the smell was profoundly disgusting! I can't find a replacement filter either in case that's what is causing it. I can't use it with the awful smell.
