I purchased these on sale at Target and plan to buy more as soon as finances will allow. My husband and I were smokers for several years and quit. When we stopped smoking we wanted to remove as much smoke odor from our home as possible. We also have a few cats and in part of the basement near the litterboxes, there was an odor problem. We bought 3 of these and placed them in the worst areas of the house. The one near the litterboxes made a significant improvement in just a couple of hours on high.
Without even expecting it, I noticed a definite improvement in our allergies right away. The air feels cleaner and in areas that would get a little stuffy from bad ventilation, feel as fresh as the outside on a nice day. My mother is highly allergic to cats and could not spend a lot of time in our house without an allergy attack. Since we started using these, she has been able to spend hours here without so much as a single sneeze. She is now looking into getting a couple of these.
I bought these because they were the least expensive to take care of a room this size. I was just hoping for a little improvement in odors and got way more than I bargained for. I want one for every room of the house now. I sleep better, we sneeze less and the house smells great. I leave them on 24 hours a day for best results.
The only downsides: they blow cool air. During the summer I imagine this would be a plus by taking some load off of the air conditioner, but in winter it contributes to a cold room. They can be a little noisy on the high setting. I usually run them on high when I'm not home or in that room, and on low the rest of the time. On the low setting, they are no more loud than a usual furnace and very tolerable. I do wish it had the permanent filters, but these are supposed to last at least 3 months, so you shouldn't need to change them but a few times a year.
