Tools and Hardware Reviews of Holmes HCH4051-UM Ceramic Heater with Adjustable ThermostatCustomer Review: Phacts and Physics Summary: 5 Stars
Temperature outside is 35 degrees. Temperature in my 9x11 study is 60 degrees before I turned on the heater. Turned on the unit on the lower setting (1000W) and the temperature in the room climbed to 67 degrees in 15 minutes. I'm monitoring the temperature in the room as I type. Here's a fact: Electric heaters are 99.9% efficient. That means if they claim to generate 1000W of heat, then ALL 1000W of electricity gets generated to heat. After all, heat is the lowest form of energy and every type of energy eventually gets converted to heat. Even the electricity used to run the fan. As the fan blades spin (kinetic energy) the blades slice through the air particles causing friction and causing a little bit of heat 0.05% of the heat. Same thing with noise energy from the fan. Noise does not last forever. Eventually it will turn into heat, the other 0.05% of the heat. So, in conclusion of that fact, a golf-ball size heater that generates 1000W of heat is as efficient as a basket-ball size heater that also generates 1000W of heat. Enough Physics.
Lets talk about savings. The thermostat in the house is set at 55 degrees (with that setting, the small study where I am now is always 5 degrees warmer than the rest of the house in the winter). In Maryland, energy is rated at $0.12 per KW-hour during the winter. That means, if I turn on my heater at 1000W setting (1KW) and leave it on for one hour, I use up 12 cents of electricity. Without the central heat, the electric bill in the winter time with the thermostat set at 55 degrees is approximately $80. I know this because the house I live in now was on sale for 9 months before we bought it last June. The thermostat was set at 55 degrees in the winter by the owner. I retrieved the past electric bills and was able to see how much electricity was used by the central heater. Now, if I use my little electric ceramic heater 5 hours a day (which we normally do) at a setting of 1000W (the lower setting), then that just cost me $1.20 a day. For 30 days, that's $36. So how much did I exactly save on electric bills? Well, before we bought the little heater, we set the thermostat in the house at 63 degrees (study room was at 68 degrees - always 5 degrees warmer) and we practically lived in the study while still being cold. Our electric bill was $220. For the past couple of months, we set the thermostat at 55 degrees and used the ceramic heater in the room we were sitting and our electric bill went down to $170. A savings of $50. That means that my wife and I consume around $90 of electricity a month using other appliances (washer, dryer, oven, lights, etc) regardless of the season. Of course, there are many parameters to consider such as how cold it was from one month to the other etc. But the bottom line is, the little electric heater did save us money and paid for itself in two weeks.
Keep in mind that having a little heater in the house while the rest of the house is set at 55 degrees in the winter time is not practical when you have little kids running around from room to room. Right now, we have no kids (we're newly weds) but we're going to take advantage of any savings we can get.
If I had more time, I would have measured the increase in temperature in other rooms. We use the heater in our master bedroom and it works fine. We use it in our kitchen and family room (they are open on each other) and it works fine. Remember, 1000W is a 1000W no matter the size of the heater.
Good luck.
PS: After 30 minutes, temp in the 9x11 room is 70 degrees. Perfect temperature indoors during the winter in MD!
