I have owned several humidifiers in the past and decided to purchased the Holmes HM495 because I was tired of paying for replacement filters. I've owned it for 3 months. Here are the top things that I think make this a 5 star humidifier:
1. Handles hard water exceptionally well (no white dust). My water is rated 'very hard' and I have never had a problem.
2. No replacment parts or filters. Just add water. You do need to buy some white vinegar and use an old tooth brush to clean out the base weekly, but that only takes 2-3 minutes.
3. Very quiet. On the highest setting you can barely hear it.

I absolutely love this humidifier for many reasons. No filters! Quiet! Compact! Attractive! I have this humdifier in my 13x11 bedroom and keep the setting on low which is adequate to keep the humidity level at 50%. Keeping the setting on low lasts for three days with every refill. When my old filter-type humidifier uses its last filter, I will purchase another filterless humidifier to replace it and save a lot of money by not having to purchase the very expensive filters.Customer Review: Great Buy tested over time

We have had this humidifier for over 3 years and it has performed very well. We are buying another one for our other room. It is very easy to clean and it is filter less, no hassle at all. The best part is that it is cool mist humidifier and keeps the room temp in control. Our room is 16x14' and it works well for this size. I've owned this humidifier for 2 years now and it's still working great! No filters and hardly any maintenance. I clean out the base every so often (when I don't "see" the mist coming out) and that's about it. I have used Holmes ultrasonic humidifiers for more than 10 years. It raises the bedroom humidity closer to 45-50%-with positive effects on sinus/breathing etc. This new model posseses the same excellent mechanical and electrical design and easier to clean than the older rectangular top tank version. The handle on top is great!
