Tools and Hardware Reviews of Holmes HM495-UC Ultrasonic Medium-Room HumidifierCustomer Review: Humidifier Summary: 4 Stars
This is one great humidifier. It is quiet, small and works well. One thing I have found is that it clogs up and won't work too well after a while with my really hard water. I just soak it in vinegar and it is good for quite a while.
Customer Review: Not real impressed Summary: 3 Stars
I bought this humidifier about 6 weeks ago when I couldn't find replacement filters for my HM1280 at the store. I was attracted to the filterless design. After 6 weeks, I have ordered the other filters online and am ready to get rid of this model. First, you have to clean it weekly, not a big deal to some, but I have to carry everything downstairs to deal with it. Mine gets a rusty scum around the water line and the minerals build up where it blows. I also learned to take it apart before I moved it or else I ended up with water everywhere. Second, I run it on medium and it leaves white dust everywhere! I have asthma and allergies... can this possibly be healthy? We have soft water and I can't afford distilled as someone suggested. I know it's the minerals out of the water since they aren't being trapped by a filter, but it's making my air cleaner work harder, too. I carry gallon jugs upstairs for filling the humidifiers. That works well for me. I have had no problems with leaking like some, thank goodness. And I'm glad I haven't had it long enough for it to start breaking down the seals yet. Yes, it's quiet, but I didn't mind the "white noise" of the other machine. It seems to be keeping our room moist on medium... no dry sinuses since we started using it. I'm willing to replace a filter twice a year instead of cleaning this one constantly and having the white dust everywhere.
Customer Review: Ultra quiet! Summary: 3 Stars
I've used it all day everyday since I bought it. It's ultra quiet, and I've not had any of the white dust or wet area that others have complained about. I let it run dry to test the safety shut off feature, and although it did run for awhile after it was empty, it did shut off after the container was dry, as the instructions say it's supposed to. Much less coughing around here since the day I plugged it in. I'm quite happy, I'm actually here today to purchase a second one for the other end of the house. The only thing I do NOT like, is how difficult it is to fill. Unless you have a really deep sink, you're going to have to fill it using a pitcher like I do. It's simply too tall to sit down in most standard sinks and refill under the faucet.
Customer Review: It works but isn't perfect. Summary: 3 Stars
I have owned this Holmes HM495 for over a month now (five weeks going on six) and at first I found it a bit of pain. The fill tank was designed by the same GM engine designer who came up with the idea of making the car owner remove the front tires of the vehicle to get to the spark plugs.
Also, I found that the humidifier works fine until you move it, then the mist stops. To resolve this, you have to empty the base unit of water and then it works. Not sure how that got past their QA department.
So far there have been no leaks, and I now leave it in one place so it just works. I fill the tank before bed and run the humidifier on Full all night. I have no complaints on how it works once you get it working.
Customer Review: Not sure how well it works. Summary: 3 Stars
We bought this humidifier because our 3 month old baby keeps getting stuffed up during the night with our central air. It is extremely quiet only a little gurgling once in a while. It definitely makes the area around it very wet, I had it sitting on top of a big bath towel and the whole front of the towel was very wet. We've never bought a humidifier before so I don't know how to tell if it's really helping our situation. She is still getting a stuffy nose but the past two mornings it has been easier to help her clear it - so maybe that's the best we can expect? It also says it will last up to 24 hours but that's on the lowest setting and we always have it set on the highest setting and it seems to last about 8-10 hours.
