Tools and Hardware Reviews of Holmes HM495-UC Ultrasonic Medium-Room Humidifier

Customer Review: It looks good
Summary: 3 Stars

I purchased my Holmes humididier two years ago, the first year ever thing was good. This year the mist will not work. The moter works fine. I have tryed to keep it cleaned out at least once a week. I remember the man on HS saying if you have hard water don't worry about it just put a little bleach in the water and it will be ok. Some one called in and ask if it was necessary to use bottle water if your water was hard. He said NO. Well here I am looking for a replacement after just one good year. Just wanted people to know if you have hard water you should use bottle water.

Customer Review: Works really well, but not durable.

I bought this humidifier the middle of last winter and like that it has a dial that adjusts how much humidity is released into the air and that it holds a great deal of water. My complaint is that though it works well, it developed a leak along one seam within several months after I bought it. So far the water just leaks into the base, so it's still going strong, but I am guessing that the leak will get worse and I'll have to replace it at the end of this season.

Customer Review: So, So!!

I'm in the desert and I really needed something for the dry air in my room. But it's only helped a little bit since I got it and maybe that's all that can be expected since I am in the desert.

Customer Review: Should be better
Summary: 2 Stars

Pros: It works. (I think.) Relatively large tank. No filters and low energy usage (30W) as with any ultrasonic unit.

Cons: DEFINITELY NOT SILENT or even quiet, and the noise it makes is pretty annoying. Measured from a meter away, my apartment is 35 dB with the humidifier off and 44 dB with it on, with a fairly pronounced peak at 600 Hz. Very disappointing for a product that has "virtually silent" on the box.

Also, it's supposed to turn off when the tank and reservoir run dry. But I left the unit on for almost 2 days with an empty tank (to dry out) producing no vapor and it still had as much standing water in the reservoir as ever. Very poor design.

Also poor design is that the tank sits in this standing water, so when you remove the tank, a small amount of water spills on your floor. And when you turn it upside down to refill, more water spills. Would it be so bad to have an opening on the top of the tank so we can refill it without getting water all over?

Other comments: As much as I don't like this unit, some other reviews of it are hilarious. For example, the people who can't refill the tank because their sink or bathtub isn't big enough. They can't figure out how to fill a smaller container with water and then pour it into the tank? Seriously, this is like an experiment scientists would run on chimps on PBS. And the chimps would do better than the Amazon reviewers.

Customer Review: this humidifier is a rip off

First, I didn't notice any difference in the humidity in my bedroom; a visible mist just shoots up. Then, I found it very hard to clean. There's just a small round hole at the bottom my small hand can barely fit in, to clean it, and all the water never entirely goes out, so I have work a wash cloth around the edges to dry it. The only place I can fill it, is in the bathroom since it is too tall for me to use in the kitchen sink which is closer. I can't fill it up entirely because then it would be too heavy for me to carry into the bedroom where I both sleep and also work.

It looks good, but is not worth the price; the cheap one I had before did the same job (maybe better) and was a lot
easier to fill and clean, despite the fact that I needed to buy filters. That was the one drawing point with this one.
