Customer Review: Works good, but too loud at night. Summary: 4 Stars
I've owned this product now for over 2.5 years. Although I knew I was getting a slightly older model, I bought it for it's features. I was surprised at how tall this unit is (2 ft approx.) in comparison to the seemingly small online picture.
Pros: It heats our little office very nicely. The thermostat maintains the desired temperature impressively well. It's light weight, but a bit tall for my liking. The tip over safety feature has worked amazingly well. I have not had to reset the unit in over 2.5 yrs. It's also very bump-sensitive, in that, whenever I accidentally bump it, it immediately shuts itself off! The power cord has an added padding feature for about a foot coming out of the machine, that makes it a bit more reliable than others.
Cons: It's extremely loud at night. I couldn't sleep for 2 nights in a row due to the noise, when I first got it. I'd compare it to the distortion-like noise of a T.V. when there is no reception/input. My wife and I woke up thinking the alarm went off really loud.
Areas to improve: Try to find a quieter way to operate. Panel button should have forward and backward buttons to control the temp, instead of pushing the same button several times till you get to the desired temp. Also, the back side carrying handle could use a better angle to make lifting and carrying a bit straighter.
My bottomline opinion after experiencing it for over 2.5 years:- It's great for day time use for a smaller room. Not recommended for night time use in bedroom while trying to sleep, unless using ear plugs. I raised the rating to a 4 star because of it's consistent performance over 2.5 years.Holmes HQH319-U Quartz Tower Heater with 1Touch® Electronic Thermostat
Customer Review: Very simple design Summary: 4 Stars
The furnace went out in my parents' home over Thanksgiving break. They live in Alaska, so this is not a small problem. It was going to be several days before the furnace could function again, so my dad sent me out on a mission to find some space heaters. My dad's only request was that the heaters be able to heat fairly large spaces. I went to several stores including, Walmart, Lowes, Target, Fred Meyer, and then finally Sears. Sears seemed to have the best heaters for what we were needing. I settled on this heater because it looked simple to use (one button, how much simpler can it get?). I bought two.
Fast forward a month to Christmas break and I'm surprised to see the heaters still in action long after the furnace has been fixed. My parents continue to use them in certain areas of the house, and I attribute this to three things:
1- Dead simple one button control that is very easy to use and see. One button toggles you through all of the options, including temperature control. Also, the current setting is lit by an LED and is very easy to read. This doesn't seem like that big of deal but it is. If you are constantly having to fiddle with a heater, you won't use it.
2- Lots of heat on a small footprint. This heater doesn't take up much space in a room, and you still get lots of heat.
3- Trustworthy temperature control keeps the room just right without being on too much.
Customer Review: Not a bad heater! Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased this heater to help keep my oil bills down and it has not disappointed me! I have a small living room that adjoins an oversize kitchen and this heater keeps them both comfortable. The tip-over switch is very sensitive (shutting off when I pick it up or move it), which is a plus for me with two little dogs.
There are a few downfalls as well. The one-touch thermostat is a bit of a pain, you have to hit the button a number of times just to get it set where you want it. The setting starts on "high" then goes to "low" then it starts allowing you to select the temperature eventually getting to shut off. This means about 20 button punches to get it turned off. I've just picked it up to allow the tip-over switch to shut the thing off!
The heater is also a bit loud when it turns on, warning to light sleepers!
Overall, I'm happy with the performance even with the little annoyances. However, when I buy a new heater, it wont be one with the one-touch thermostat.
Customer Review: Decent heat but not overwhelming Summary: 4 Stars
I purchased this Holmes Quartz heater about a month ago for my wife, who likes a *lot* of heat. She did not find it adequate -- it puts out a decent amount of heat, but it is not "burning" by any means. On a freezing day it does not heat her 12x12 office to 75+ degrees as she likes it. She switched to a heater with a parabolic "satellite dish" to focus the heat directly at her. That parabolic heater does not warm the office either, but it heats up anything right in front of it, to the point of discomfort, which is how she likes it!
I'm not "cold-blooded" like my wife, and I find the Holmes heater quite acceptable. Running it for 15 minutes warms up my 15x15 office for a few hours on a freezing day. The fan is a bit noisy like a typical desktop oscillating fan, but it's just more white noise in the office. The safety features are good, and maybe you'll like the thermostat control, though a simple on/off switch is enough for me.
