Tools and Hardware Reviews of Honeywell 50250 99.97% Pure HEPA Round Air Purifier

Customer Review: Works just fine + permanent HEPA filter
Summary: 5 Stars

I've read so many reviews of air purifiers that it became an exercise in futility. I zeroed in on the Honeywell 50250 as the best overall best bang for the buck. Several reviewers posted that the 50250 does not have a permanent HEPA filter. For that you need to get the 5025N. Well, I bought a 50250 yesterday at Home Depot for $169.00 and it clearly states on the box, and in the user manual that the 50250 has a permanent HEPA filter, and gives directions for cleaning it by vacuuming. So, it has a permanent HEPA filter. It also has a carbon-based "pre-filter" that wraps around the HEPA filter -- the carbon filter must be replaced, probably yearly. THR HEPA filter looks like a giant car air filter, about ten inches high.

Anyhow, having the unit for only a few days, I can't speak for its effectiveness, but I will say that it isn't nearly as loud as some claim, and putting it in the room with our central air return seems to really help remove lots of dust that would normally be recycled back through the system via the return duct and 3M Filtrete filter. It may be just wishful thinking, but I swear our household air seems fresher, and we live in south Florida where the air conditioning is a big deal.

Customer Review: bad smell
Summary: 5 Stars

I have a severe case of pollen allergy this year and after careful reading all the reviews on the 50250, (especially Richard Wong's review, but I am thankful for ALL reviews)I decided to get the 50250 Honeywell purifier with the permanent lifetime Hepa air filter. I am very happy with the unit and it has helped me to get through the night without the nasal discharge associated with the pollen allergy. During the night I keep it in my closed bedroom at the second speed setting on a timer which shuts off at 2:00 am. After a couple of weeks running the purifier, it developed a bad smell in my closed bedroom. It was nauseating and I was about to kick the unit out and return it to the store where I bought it. I could not live with that terrible smell. Then it dawned on me. Could the pre-filter have caused the smell, since I did not have the smell before? I then vacuumed the pre-filter and the smell went away. There was no warning on the machine that the pre-filter was dirty, but enough dust and crap had settled on the pre-filter and emanated a terrible - hard to describe - smell. So, don't throw out the unit when you get a bad smell, clean your pre-filter. Four stars for this unit so far!

Customer Review: Love it!
Summary: 5 Stars

I really love these Filters. They work great. A little loud but I like really enjoy the white noise as it helps me focus as it prevents me from hearing every little noise going on.

After a month, especially after first use with a room that was still dusty, you will see a thick layer of dust on the prefilter. At least, I did. My guitars in the room always had dust on them. Now once I dusted and vacuumed my room well, I don't see dust on the guitars anymore. ie. just a sign these are working. Half of my family has allergies and this has made a difference.

In regards to the reviewer Richard Wong's (the Wolf), I bought this model here on Amazon and it states it has "Lifetime True HEPA filter vacuums clean for easy maintenance" which I assume means it is the 'N' model? Even the manual that came with it said it was a lifetime filter. I was a bit confused by the comment about this not being the lifetime version. Is there another way to tell for certain? On the bottom of the unit I have (purchased from Amazon) it states "List Air Filter 3F49 P/N N.0299". Sounds good? Anyway, thanks for the great review and comparison.

Customer Review: 50250N is the same as 50250S
Summary: 5 Stars

The 50250-S product is identical to the recently discontinued 50250-N which advertised a permanent HEPA filter. The only thing that has changed with the 50250-S is the product packaging. While both the air purifier and included filters inside have not changed, the packaging now advertises the true HEPA filter as long life as opposed to permanent. Again, only the advertisement has changed, the product remains the same.

Took me a while to find this, which I suspected because of the glass fiber filter listed on the box.

As for the air cleaner itself, largest one I owned yet. Love my old Honeywell 51500, and it worked great, I assume this new unit will work just as good.

FYI, the unit is loud, but between not breathing and noise, I take the noise. I live in Sacramento where allergies are one of the worse in USA. I leave it on high all day, and when I'm home, its set on low, and off when i'm sleeping. I do this 24/7 during spring and summer. These Honeywell units work fine for me, and I have no allergies at all when I'm inside the house.

Customer Review: Great Air Filter, Also a nice sound machine :)
Summary: 5 Stars

We own 2 of these filters and they are really exceptionally good at filtering the room air very thoroughly. It's a little bit large, but the other air filters we have tried that were smaller did not even come close to the effectiveness of this model.

The filter is easy to take apart and clean. It's also very nice that you can just vacuum the black pre-filter and it's good to go again.

I see that some people talk about the sound of the machine but I view that as an up side and not a problem at all. We have this air filter in our bedrooms at both of our homes and it creates a nice "white noise" so that you can sleep and not be woken up by every small random noise during the night. I know this is not part of why you want an air filter but it is a very nice added bonus, in fact I am so spoiled by this wonderful feature that I now have to take a sound machine with me when I travel to replicate the "white noise sound" of my beloved air filter or I cannot sleep! This would also be fabulous for people who live in an Apt. or Condo to drown out neighboring sounds...you need this air filter, I love both of mine!!
