Tools and Hardware Reviews of Honeywell HW-628 Enviracaire Twin Window Fan

Customer Review: Great little fan
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought two of these last year, and they really work. It never gets super hot in Los Angeles, but it does get hot enough in the summer to get uncomfortable, especially when trying to sleep. I live in an older apartment, and most older apartments in Los Angeles do not have air conditioning.

I put one of these in my bedroom and one in my living room. I turn them on to exhaust air during the day when I am at work, which I have noticed effectively cools my apartment by probably 10 degrees. And then when I get home in the evening, after it starts cooling down outside, I reverse them to bring cool air into the apartment. Actually, in my bedroom, during the day I turn the top fan on to exhaust air and the bottom to bring in fresh air so that I get a nice circulation going.

The thermostats work just fine, although it would be nice to have something fancy like an actual temperature gauge. As it stands, you just have to swing it and find the best setting for you.

I would highly recommend these fans. They move quite a bit of air for their size, have a nice range of speed settings, are relatively quiet, and the dual fans, with individual operation, are a big added bonus.

You can't go wrong with these.

Customer Review: Powerful and Quiet
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought the Honeywell HW-628 last summer; and it is my perfect fan. Having tried several kinds of floor-standing and window fans (including a Bionaire with a thermostat), *this* one cools me off better than any I have ever used.

The features are as listed on the product webpage. I love having the ability to adjust the speed and direction of both fans. The product is mechanically very well put-together, sits in a window well, does *fairly* well for rain (but I would take it in for driving rain), and best of all cools me off. I can actually feel a gentle breeze from it (from across the room) that actually cools me (and the room) even though it feels so gentle.

I always use mine on high with one fan as exhaust and one pulling air in. I find mine to be extremely quiet. On high as I use it, it does "have a note", e.g. an audible pitch to it, rather than having no discernible pitch. This does not bother me, and mine is more quiet than the majority of fans I try out in the stores, or have purchased.

If these characteristics appeal to you, I recommend you try it out. You can probably find them at brick-and-mortar stores too (where it is easier to return if you don't like something;-)

Customer Review: Excellent fan
Summary: 5 Stars

It took me awhile to get this fan because some people had commented that it was noisy or that it was not powerful enough to blow-in or exhaust air. Well, none of those are the cases. This is an amazing fan. It is so powerful that I keep it in the lowest speed setting to keep my bedroom cool and airy. The thermostat works great. While I am away, it turns on the fan automatically as needed. Thus I no longer walk into a hot stuffy room when I come home from work.

A quick rundown of its features. The unit has two fans that work independently to blow-in fresh air from outside or exhaust air from inside. The settings for each fan are low, high, supper and off.

The thermostat knob if fully turned counterclockwise will keep the fans off until the room gets exceedingly hot. On the other had, if the knob if fully turned clockwise, will keep the fans running until the room gets exceedingly cold. Somewhere in the middle is the tipping point that turns the fan on or off depending on your desire room temperature.

The fan fits nicely in the window casing. My window has a screen, and it does not get in the way of the fan.

Customer Review: The best fans I ever bought for the hot summer nights
Summary: 5 Stars

The original fan I bought says that I bought it in 1998, which atonished me considering how hard I worked it before one of the fans motors decided to not worked any longer during the end of the summer of 2006, I ran it for 24 hours a day for 3-4 months every year. I live on the second floor and during the summer this apartment can get up to 100 degees inside, it was impossible to get a decent nights sleep. Then I came across "[[ASIN: 105-1061563-7871465 Honeywell HW-628 twin window fan. "]]" That night I put it in the window on exhaust and for the first time I had to use a light blanket to sleep, that's how much it helped to bring in the cool air in from the small window across the room with the help of a fan. It's quiet, it does the job and I love it and I recommend it to everyone who has the same problem. Now I put a large fan in my kitchen to carry out the hot air and I am able to deal living in this apartment through the hot summer nights and days much easier and with more comfort. It was worth every dollar I spent on it. I bought another brand for the living room and it didn't have as much power even though the price was the same, it wasn't worth it.

Customer Review: Drill needed for vertical installation
Summary: 5 Stars

If you have a window that dictates vertical placement, having access to and knowing how to use a drill can come in very handy. Although the unit has extending panels, it also has a bracket that attaches to your window frame for extra safety. I dont know if you've ever tried to put a screw into the wall with only your hands and a screwdriver, but trust me, it's not gonna happen! That being said, I've never used a power drill before, but being an HGTV addict, I was well up to the task...I know enough to pre-drill a hole slightly smaller than the screw so that everything around it wouldn't split or crack as it would if the screw was driven in directly. after that it was a piece of cake! It took no more than 20 minutes to install INCLUDING the crash course I gave myself on how to use a drill and the hunt for safety goggles!

The product itself is wonderful!!! The concurrent exhaust and fan feature is exactly what my small bathroom with the tiny west facing window needs in the hot SoCal afternoon sun. The auto temperature control is a valuable bonus! If you have a larger room you'd like to keep cool all the time, this little fan will do it!
