Tools and Hardware Reviews of Hoover Flair Bagless Upright Stick Vacuum with Power Nozzle, S2220Customer Review: One of our most prized and most used cleaning tools! Summary: 5 Stars
We've had our Flair for over 15 months now, and we are so dependent on it for daily cleaning, it's hard to imagine having to clean without it. We have 2 dogs, 6 cats and 9 birds, which means constant cleaning. The Flair handles all of it: dog and cat hair, scattered kibble, food flung by the birds, dust bunnies, kitty litter. We have a combination of tile and hardwood on most of our area where we use it the most, and one room with low-pile berber carpet. We use the power nozzle setting only on the carpeted area. With the swivel head, it maneuvers around and under furniture and bird cages beautifully. I love the way the Flair flattens out to go under things. And it will stand on it's own when I need to stop for any reason. I can vacuum approximate 1400 square feet of our first floor without having to stop, except to relocate the plug to different rooms. I avoid cordless appliances for the most part, as they are only good for small and quick tasks. Also, corded devices generally are stronger -- a feature we definitely need.
Be sure to order an extra filter. When one gets very dirty and clogged after much use, you can rinse it out, let it dry and reuse it, but it takes a good while to dry. I use the sink spray nozzle to force out some of the clogged dust and it cleans up quite well. Be careful with the frame wires -- they can pop out of place if you're too agressive with cleaning the filter. Although you can get them back into place with some effort, it's somewhat annoying. The replacement filters we bought fit a little snugger than the original cup, but it hasn't created any problem. We just have to make sure it's seated in the cup well and then give the dirt cup a firm bump with the heel of our hand and listen for the snap that enures it latched.
For the outside air filters on the sides of the unit, Hoover says that it should be replaced when it gets dirty. But we gently wash out the ones on our unit (with the spray nozzle on our sink), let them dry, and place them back on the unit -- haven't had a problem. We have some replacement outside filters -- just haven't used them yet.
A few days ago, our well-intentioned, workaholic 7 year old grandson managed to somehow break the connector that connects the main body of the unit with the power nozzle. We were able to find a replacement part at [...] for about $9.00. Until it arrives, we have the power nozzle duct-taped on, because I'm so dependent on the Flair, I don't want to go a few days without using it. The swivel function is compromised in the meantime, but it's doing the job otherwise.
A little tip: When you've been vacuuming a while with the power nozzle in neutral, if you lift the unit about an inch off the floor and switch it to power nozzle setting (rollers turning) for just a couple of seconds, some of the dust bunnies and solids that may have lodged around the rollers will be dislodged. Just be sure the unit is facing away from the freshly vacuumed area, because some debris is most likely going to fly out. Then just vacuum it all up.
This is not a full-sized vacuum and should not be expected to do what a full-sized vac does. But, it does an excellent job on hard floors and a very good job on low-pile berber. Our heavy-duty big vac is reserved for the deep pile carpet in our bedrooms upstairs. As with anything, if you read the instructions and perform common-sense maintenance, the device should not give you much problem.
A nice update on the Flair: the price has gone down almost $15 since we bought ours! We'll probably be buying another one to keep upstairs for the hardwood and tile areas and for light touch-ups on the deep pile carpet.
UPDATE: Received replacement part from Hoover, repaired our vac, and we're back in business. Hooray!
