Tools and Hardware Reviews of Hoover L2310 GUV 10 Amp 5-Gallon Garage Utility VacuumCustomer Review: The little Vacuum that could Summary: 5 Stars
I received this vacuum for Christmas, thanks to some selective printouts left on the printer ;-), and installed it a week later.
Due to my garage layout, I had the choice to install it nearer the door to my house or on the opposite side of the garage door (23' farther away). Either way would work equally well for garage cleanup and car detailing but, by putting it near my door, I could leverage it towards chores inside the home as well.
I chose to install it nearer my door.
The first in-home chore - the cat rodent makes a game out of throwing kitty litter all over the floor and the GUV makes it no contest to cleanup when he gets into his Olympic form and really goes for broke. Sweeping it up works just fine, but when he has an episode just before company arrives, it takes barely longer to rewind the hose than to perform the cleanup.
Also, the mess associated with shredding a year's worth of bills, cleaning out the tiny shredding bag a dozen times, takes no time.
And finally, as I'm sure everyone does their part to keep their refrigerator running at top condition by actually cleaning the refrigerant coils, the GUV is perfect. My coils are on the bottom of the refrigerator and it's a real pain to access. Past cleanings were drudgery, lugging the big canister vac around. The big difference here for me is that the canister vac hose is big, heavy, stiff and requires an effort to position into the little spaces required to clean the coils while the GOV's hose, weighs nothing, is very flexible and requires no effort to position. The extra long flat vacuum attachment and the swivel hose head seems tailor made for this purpose. Also of great benefit, the GUV's hose and nozzle are plastic and I don't have to worry about the metal handle of the canister vac damaging the copper coils or coming in contact with any electrical part.
My installation was perhaps a little different than most due to the fact that between where I'd have to install the vac and the door lays my gas water heater. My concern was that the exhaust air from the top of the unit might interfere with the normal convection process of gas water heaters.
The normal GUV installation results in the air being exhausted against the wall due to the exhaust vents being in the rear 180 degrees of the unit. To direct the airflow away from my adjacent water heater, and associated exhaust riser, I installed the GUV rotated 90 degrees on a ¾" piece of plywood that I attached with lag screws into the 2x4 stud wall (the mounting surface now being perpendicular to the wall). This resulted in the air being exhausted opposite the water heater and tests showed no interference with the necessary convection process.
I also mounted the GUV higher on the wall to maximize the available floor space under the unit. This resulted in the waste bucket clamps being at eye level - making it very easy to remove and reattach. The down side mounting the unit higher is accessibility to the on-off switch.
To solve this, I installed a power outlet near the top of the GUV for the power cord and wired that outlet to a regular light switch at normal height. The power rocker switch on the GUV remains in the on position. To use the GUV, we simply flip the light switch.
The GUV is much quieter than both my shop vac and the household canister vacuum. While you have to shout to be heard over the shop vac and canister vacuum, you can easily carry on a conversation near the GUV without shouting.
While you will not be lifting any bowling balls with the vacuum of the GUV, I don't believe there should be any expectation to do so. The GUV has a 1 1/2" hose while my shop-vac has a 2 1/2" hose. If you have need for serious vacuum, you wouldn't use a handheld battery powered vacuum. You'd use the right tool for the right job and the GUV has its niche. For the people complaining about its inability to vacuum up unlimited amount of sawdust and wood chips, they clearly market it as an "Utility Vacuum" and NOT a SHOP VACUUM - there's a reason why devices customary to such roles have 2 1/2" or bigger hoses. It's irrational to expect something with a 1 1/2 hose to perform as well. Do your research if you have such needs instead of bagging on every device with the word vacuum in its name.
I love this vac and spoke highly of it to a friend who bought two of them. One he installed in his garage and the other he installed in a closet in his house, central to his bedrooms. His wife uses the 30' hose to maintain that part of the house. She loves how quite but handy it is.
I highly recommend this unit to anyone who has general cleanup needs.
