Tools and Hardware Reviews of Hoover MaxExtract Dual V Carpet Cleaner, Garnet-F7411900Customer Review: So far so great! Summary: 5 Stars
I just bought this Hoover Steam Vac yesterday & put it to the test today. Here's what I noticed:
1) IT CLEANS! It did a great job! I uploaded a couple of pics - one shows how easy it is to move around & use (even my 9-year old son could do it & ENJOYED IT!) and the other shows how well it cleans. We have a spot that our German Shepherd loves to lie on and it always gets so dingy from the dirt he brings in on his dirty fur. We only wash him about once a month and he goes outside a lot. You can see all the ickiness he brings in & how much of it the Hoover was able to remove if you look at the "customer pics" I uploaded.
(Also, if you look at the pictures I uploaded, notice the one with my son. I put a little note on it pointing out where my son had spilled about 1 cup of OJ an hour before. We didn't even bother wiping it up or spot treating it. We just ran the Hoover back & forth over the area & it got it up. It did take several little swipes back & forth though, but it didn't seem to take that much time. I would have had to do that with the Rug Doctor, too!)
2) EASY TO USE! I usually rent a big & bulky Rug Doctor from the store once or twice a year. We have people over often, we have a 9-year old and a dog. The carpets get a lot of use! They start looking so dingy! The Rug Doctor usually does a great job but my shoulders & arms are so sore & tired after only doing 1 or 2 rooms. The Hoover was WONDERFUL! It was actually FUN to use! Didn't seem any heavier to move around than our regular vacuum cleaner.
3) CLEANS SPOTS! I didn't take any pictures of spots but we did have 5 or 6 silver-dollar sized spots from who-knows-what. They looked like areas where something was possibly spilled & then cleaned up but not well enough so that all the future people & dog dirt stuck to it. They were darker areas - 9 or 10 shades darker than the carpet is supposed to be. I didn't do any spot treatment (probably should have). Instead, I just kept the Hoover on top of these spots for a while moving back & forth slowly. In most cases it REMOVED the spot! In 2 cases, it lightened the spot considerably. Still, without having done any spot treatment, I was pretty pleased. The only "bad" thing is that it got the areas around the spots TOO clean! I didn't go back & forth & spend as much time on all of the carpet as I did on the "spot areas" so the area immediately around these spots got cleaner than the rest of the carpet. I had to go back over the whole area to even out the color. Not really a bad thing, right? (=
4) EASY REFILL & EMPTY. It was SO easy to empty out the dirty water & refill the clean tank. Easier than the bulky, heavy Rug Doctor - probably b/c it wasn't as big & heavy. In comparison with the Rug Doctor, it seemed like I had to stop & refill/empty the tanks about the same number of times during the cleaning of our living room. That was unexpected. I thought I'd only be able to make 2 or 3 slow (I go VERY slow), long swipes of the carpet before having to refill. On the contrary, at first it seemed like the water was lasting even LONGER than the Rug Doctor. However, this got me thinking - how can LESS water last LONGER? I would imagine this is b/c not as much water is being sprayed out & therefore the water/shampoo is probably not soaking into the carpet as much as it does in the Rug Doctor. Seems like the Rug Doctor probably gives you a DEEPER clean. But that is what I was expecting anyway. Most people say you should still rent an industrial strength carpet cleaner once or twice a year to do those deep cleans.
5) CLEANING/MAINTENANCE. After we were done with the living room, I was ready to call it quits. Figured it's so easy to use, I could clean in smaller spurts (we usually rent the Rug Doctor for 24 hours & then have to a carpet cleaning marathon - NOT FUN!!!). I had read a tip in a comment from somebody that said an easy way to keep the SteamVac clean is to take it to a clean area of tile or linoleum floor & simply spray the clean water out & suck it up (set cleaner on "rinse," not "wash" so that you're spraying & sucking up water only - not soap). This will run the clean water through the system & hopefully wash out any dirty icky water. I did this for about 45 seconds & it seemed to work. Then I emptied & rinsed out the 2 water tanks. Easy. Then I laid the Hoover back on it's back & tried to clean the underneath area - there was a good bit of dog hair around the brush even though we thoroughly vacuumed before using. Most of the dog hair was easy to clean out. We popped the brush off/out easily (it was also very easy to replace). There was some dog hair in the brush contraption that we simply couldn't get to. I eventually got the tweezers out & tried to pull out as much as I could. This probably doesn't make that much sense to anyone who doesn't have the machine & know how the brush is designed. Still, I managed to pull out most of the hair. It would be nice if the brush contraption would come all the way apart so you could clean out the "inside" area but I didn't see a way to do this without possibly breaking something so I thought I'd leave well enough alone.
6) PINK FLUID! The ONLY negative I see as of now is that AFTER I was done using the Hoover & brought it onto the linoleum to clean it, it leaked a little bit of light pinkish fluid (maybe 2-3 ounces). Have no idea where it came from - seemed to be from someplace underneath but I could locate the origin. Makes me a little nervous. I didn't clean anything red or pink. Makes me think it's some sort of leak from the motor or something? I'm going to search & see if I can find out anything about it. I'm HOPING it's not a big deal - that maybe it's just a little overflow or something in the gears that might come off during the first use. I really like this SteamVac & I want to keep it. I'm giving it 5 stars anyway b/c I'm still THAT impressed by it. But I'm going to try to find out what this pink stuff is b/c even though I love the product, it wont do me any good to have it if it stops working b/c it's broken.
Hope this review helps some people. I've never owned any other steam cleaners. All I have to compare it to is the Rug Doctor that we've been renting yearly for the past 5 years. I'm very pleased with it so far. I think it will definitely pay off & be well worth the money spent on it. If I can find out what the little pink fluid leak is all about, I'll be 110% happy with this product. As is, I'm still at 99%. If the leak turns out to be something bad, I'll simply try to return it & get another one. I HOPE the return process will be simple & easy since I've already opened & used it.
