Tools and Hardware Reviews of Hoover WindTunnel Anniversary Upright Vacuum, Self-Propelled, Bagged, U6485900

Customer Review: This is a really good machine compared to everything else on the market
Summary: 5 Stars

If your looking to purchase a good upright that will clean your house from top to bottom with good results then this is a machine for you. It has really good strong suction, good tools, easy to use and very clean. I say that because its a bagged model that captures all the dirt and debris in a bag that is easily changed and thrown away without the mess of dumping out a bagless cup and cleaning off the inside filters. I mean whats the purpose of vacuuming and then opening up your machine to clean out what you just picked up. To truly keep everything you just picked up out of your house would require going to an outside garbage can and dumping it out and hopefully there will be no wind to blow it back in yoru face. I've had this windtunnel now for about 2 years and bought it when it first came out for Hoovers 100 year anniversary. With a little care and maintenance, this machine will run for a long time and serve its purpose very well. Don't let the negative reviews scare you away from this machine because it sounds like the issues people are having with it are because they don't know the proper way to use it.

Some of the issues I've read on here are not problems with the machine but in fact how people are using it. Knowing your house and making the best decision on what works best for you (upright vs. canister) is the best way to go. Uprights are designed for houses mainly of carpeting, canisters for house mainly of hard floors.

Yes this machine is heavy! It says that it weights about 21+ lbs which is due to the added weight of the self propelled feature. If you like and or need the self propelled feature than expect it to add weight to the vacuum. If you want a lightweight vacuum then this is not your vacuum but the pupose of this feature is to make it easier to push taking some of the weight off of you. I read one post that alarmed me. They were afraid the machine would tip over on their small child causing severe head damage because the machine was so heavy. As with any appliance, small children should not be playing with it to the point that it will cause severe damage to them. I mean come on, its an electrical appliance, its not a playground upon which our children should be playing. They should be tought early on if they are going to use it on how to use it. Also watching your child while using it would also help.

Belts will wear and crack which is normal after using it. The V belt used to drive the self propelled feature and the brush roll belt will wear faster than normal if your not setting the height adjustment to the correct position for the surface your vacuuming. If you have it on the wrong setting it will put unnecessary drag on the brush roll and the self propelled feature causing faster wear on the belts. The belts as on any vacuum should be changed out yearly. I've followed the simple rule of correct height setting on the carpet I'm cleaning and yearly change out and have never had one break. If the self propelled feature stops working or is sluggish then you know its time for a new belt.

I've also read that it does not pick up very well on hard floors. Its an upright and the main purpose of an upright was for a household mainly of carpeting. If you have mainly hard floors than you should probably consider using a canister with a powerhead for the smaller area rungs. This machine does come with a hard floor tool which is easily connected to the two wands stored onboard and then to the hose. This attachment along with all the others are what is called friction connection. Simply sticking the attachment to the wand and then to the hose will only result it them falling off. Attach each section to each other then simply give it a slight twist and the friction will lock it in place. People don't know that which results in complaints of them falling off. If it does not come with the extension hose you can buy one. I replaced the shorter hose with the longer extension hose and keep the longer one attached at all times so that I don't have to change or switch them out when extra reach is needed. Simply wrap the hose around the top of the unit before plugging into the base will work nicely.

It is a loud vacuum so don't think your buying a quiet machine. It has a powerful 12 amp motor which produces some of the best airflow out there. Some machine advertise this as high velocity airflow but in any case don't think your going to pull it out and vacuum while everyone else is sleeping in the house and letting them continue to sleep. The production of this airflow effectively drives the powered hand tool that comes with this machine. You can also purchase an air driven powerhead for about $50 to use on your area rugs because it can chew them up with the combination of the great suction and brush roll spinning at a high rate of speed. The addition of this air powered power head works well on all area rugs and also in smaller places where the vacuum can't go so you don't have to move heavy furniture every time you vacuum.

It is very easy to put together. The vacuum (IF NEW FROM HOOVER IN THE BOX) is packaged very nice that will survive any shipping that takes place. All you have to do is pull it out and attach the handle but make sure the self propelled feature is in the recommended position before sliding it in. I have read that people have had problems with this feature not working but it is because the switch is not in the correct position when sliding it into the base causing it to not connect with the appropriate wires in the base therefore causing it to not work when the two srews are screwed in.

It does give nice vacuum marks in the carpeting when using. Its funny because some people realy like to have the vacuum lines in their carpeting showing that they have a freshly vacuumed rug. Admit it, most people like the vacuum lines. The lines come from the bottom plate. The plate has about 4 or 5 guard protectors that are there for a purpose. They make it safe to run over the cords, not that that is recommended because you should never run over the cord but if you accidentally do, those protectors are there so the machine does not suck up the cord and do severe damage to it. All vacuums have had these protectors on them going back to the earliest of machines with a brush roll on them. Hoover made one machine back in the 60's, the Dail A Matic that for the first year it came out didn't have them and people complained about the machine eating the cord and getting wrapped further around the brush roll causing severe damage. That machine was changed early on and for the rest of the life of that model had the protectors on the bottom plate. Its hard to explain but in the opening of the brush roll area on the bottom the plate has dividers making the opening sort of sectioned off this way if the cord is run over it has a smaller opening and will not wrap itself around the revolving brush.

This machine does come with a dirt sensor that is green when its clean and red when its still picking something up from the floor. It has a switch to chnage it from very sensative to not so sensative so its your choice but it does work. After using it for a years it may require to clean the sensor off but I have never had to do that before. If its red its red for a reason and still picking something up. Fine dust under the rug may cause you to make several passes before it turns green and even if its a new rug it may be picking up the extra fluff from being new. Besides who knows where those new area rugs were before you bought them, they almost always come in a dirty shipping box and stored in dusty back rooms before hitting the sales floor so just because they are new they may not be clean.

As I said in the beginging, this is a really good machine, good value for the price and something that will last years for you with a little care and understanding of using it correctly. I swear by mine and would only use this windtunnel to clean my home.
