Tools and Hardware Reviews of Howard Leight MAX1 Earplugs Uncorded NRR33 Box/200 CountCustomer Review: These are Great... Summary: 5 Stars
I haven't used these earplugs in quite a while, and I can't say *for sure* that they were this brand, but they looked exactly like this, with the nice contoured shape (I hate the ones that are just a cylinder shape with one side (possibly) rounded for easier insertion.
I used to work at a local Punk club, 2-3 shows every weekend for a couple years, and we used earplugs like these - orange in color, bought in bulk and individually (in pairs) wrapped. We had them for free for workers and kids, $0.25 for everyone else.
These were great at such high noise volumes, were easy to insert (and take out and re-use during the same show). I have used other cheap earplugs that just have not fit as nicely, nor have been as efficient at blocking out the noise either.
So again, while I can't state that these were the EXACT Brand that we used, there were like these with a 33dB noise rating, had the same contoured shape, orange color, and made of the same materials.
I think that with all these same specs of the earplugs, that brand name would not make much difference, unless one brand definitely showed inferior manufacturing of the product over another...
The ones we used were great in quality, you felt like you could re-use them over and over again if needed, compared to others that feel like they are falling apart and need to be thrown away for just that reason alone, and not for health safety - dirty earplugs...
I have been dealing with very loud neighbors lately, and my roommate has been bringing home from work cheap earplugs for us to use. I have had nothing good to say about them, and after seeing these and others like these here on Amazon, I am thinking about buying a box to try out and see if they are indeed the same as the ones I used all the time before.
My roommate can use them at work if I don't like them, or maybe get his employers to purchase this brand/type of earplugs instead if we both like them (take a few to work and let the other employees test them out too).
I am confident that anyone would find these of great use and we never found people that these earplugs didn't fit (from babies under 1-2 years old, smaller children, teens, young adults and others ranging in age up to their 60's or so).
They squish down alot when rolled before insertion, and are comfortable if you have smaller ears when they don't fully expand, and they expand enough, and can be inserted a bit further in the ear for people with larger ear openings.
Re-use of product does not effect the expanding of the foam like with some other cheaper earplugs.
Customer Review: Excellent for Commutes on Trains, Subways, Etc. Summary: 5 Stars
As a daily commuter on Chicago's El, I found myself realizing how much I reading I could get done when the train was quiet. By this, I don't just mean light reading such as cheesy Robert Jordan fantasy novels; I mean heavy stuff like Kant--stuff I actually had to think about in order to comprehend it.
After forgetting my iPod and using earplugs (which I had in my coat pocket from a weekend of target practice with a relative), I was seriously amazed by how quiet it was on the train.
A caveat: I seem to remember those earplugs (which were also orange) as being better ones than these, although they're probably more likely to be at a specialized store. I first bought the Howard Leight LL1 Laser Lite Earplugs, but found they were too small for my ear canals. While noises were muffled with those, there didn't really seem to be much point in wearing them. Those earplugs do, however, have an advantage in that they're easier to take out. They were also ever so slightly more comfortable.
I then bought these earplugs, however, and was happy to learn that they largely shut out the world. I was able to ignore all the people yakking on their cell phones as though they were in a field in Montana, the noise of the train moving was pretty much removed altogether, and conversations were literally so muted that I could only see people's mouths moving. I imagine that there are no earplugs that will absolutely drown out everything, though, and I can still hear the voice on the intercom announcing each stop (which might actually be a good thing).
Today, I leave my iPod at home and I feel like my life is actually enriched by being able to read on the way to work. In addition, because I can't hear all the yakking and occasional yelling, I arrive at work in a much more peaceful and less agitated state of mind. Even if you don't think those sounds really bother you (as I, in fact, believed), it's amazing to witness how you feel when you arrive at your destination. It's a very potent sensation of peace.
Highly recommended, especially for anyone who takes a subway or elevated train to work.
Main criticism: Not very easy to take out if you have them in too far.
Customer Review: The Best I've Used, With Some Usage Experience Summary: 5 Stars
As with the other revieweers, I use these for motorcycle riding, working with power tools, occasional shooting, and also for airplane trips. They do the job and are widely available in the U.S. if you forget yours. I will add some suggestions to the other reviews.
1. The only real complaint about these generally arises due to ear canal size and configuration. Before buying 200, pick up the retail package of six sets and try them out for size. These are available in most chain drug stores.
2. If they are too large, Leight has some other earplugs which may work better. If they are too small, try washing a pair among your clothes in a washing maching - just stick them in a pocket. This makes them puff up substantially.
3. To insert, roll the plug between thumb and forefinger of the hand on the same side as the intended ear. When the plug is about half its original diameter, slide it in the ear quickly. It may help to slide the opposite hand over your head and pull up on the ear as you insert the plug.
4. I find that these go in easily in the morning after a shower, but are more difficult to fit after lunch or in the evening. Any sort of lubrication that you don't mind having in your ear helps. A little spit works fine for me.
5. When you remove them, e.g. in the middle of the day for lunch, there will usually be earwax on the plugs. I usually just wipe that off with a napkin and re-use the plug for the afternoon's efforts. YMMV.
6. These can be re-used, but they're cheap enougn not to, especially if one buys in lots of 200. Keeping them clean helps. Ideally, one need not do this, but I may run short on a trip and I'd rather re-use them than do without. There is a risk of infection if one overdoes this.
7. I also use these when driving my truck with the windows down, but only one in the left ear.
Finally...even if you don't use these...hearing loss is cumulative, and it's not going to get any better as you age. If you don't use these, use something!
Customer Review: Lifesaving product for the sound sensitive traveller Summary: 5 Stars
My personal pet peeve are the buzzy, obnoxiously loud room a/c units that have infiltrated most motels and hotels around the country. There was a time when these units were designed to be fairly silent and not too obnoxious. Not anymore apparently as the cheaply made buzzy, irritating, noisy cheaply made room air conditioners are everywhere.
I've been told I'm 'sensitive' to sound but personally I think my reaction to a 60db piece of noise making equipment a few feet from my head, one which is often buzzy or has oscillating sound, at night is normal. To me the people it doesnt bother are the weird ones, what are they comatose? Anyway in step these little wonders. They are the only earplugs I use that effectively block your average noisy hotel air conditioner to the point you cant hear it or the sound is inconsequential. Yet you can sit in bed and still hear the tv at a non ridiculous volume so if the fire alarm goes off you'll not have a problem. And sleep, well I sleep like a baby with them in. There was some initial discomfort on about the third day in a row of wearing them but I found that if I relaxed into the discomfort after a few more days my ears got used to them.
The key to getting the most benefit out of these earplugs is to read the instructions and follow every step. Including the reverse ear pull, yes it does take a bit of practice to get it right. Also to begin with I found myself perhaps not pushing the plugs as deep into the ear as I could have out of caution. But really there is no way to get these things too deep in your ear so now I shove them quite deep in the canal. Theres no fear of the foam tearing upon removal, though it is important to twist the plug rather than yank them to break the negative seal that is formed.
Falling asleep in a situation you know you wouldnt have done so without these plugs feels wonderful. Man's ingenuity conquering a negative environment. Thanks Howard Leight.
Customer Review: Affordable and Effective Earplugs! Summary: 5 Stars
My dear neighbor is very old and almost deaf. The music he enjoys is beautiful, but the volume unbearable. When I first started law school, the music was a big problem: the constant humming and drumming was driving me insane. To make matters worse, my neighbor had insomnia. The music would come at random hours in the dead of night. I had difficulty concentrating, especially during finals. Several times, I found myself pounding on his door in the middle of the night out of desperation, but I always felt bad because he was not even aware how loud the music was. Moving was not an option at the time.
The top quality earplugs at the local grocery store were a bit expensive. As a broke first-year law student, I could not afford to buy those in large quantities. Then my prayers were answered: I discovered "Howard Leight" brand earplugs. They were affordable, and very effective. For about $20, I got a gigantic supply that was sufficient for two semesters. I started wearing them while studying. All noises would vanish when I put them on--except the occasional humming from my neighbor's loudspeaker. I couldn't hear the music with the earplugs on, but the bass was still audible at times.
This is what worked for me: I would wear these earplugs and sit at my study desk facing the wall where the music was coming from. Although I am not very familiar with the laws of physics (i.e. how sound travels), I noticed that I heard almost nothing when I sat facing the wall. When I sat with my back toward the wall, the humming was audible. It was counter-intuitive, but worked very well for me.
I would highly recommend this product to students who have sharp hearing, study a lot, and are stressed during finals.
