Tools and Hardware Reviews of Howard Leight R-01526 Impact Sport Electronic EarmuffCustomer Review: Best product out there Summary: 5 Stars
After reading so many bad reviews about electronic earmuffs I was delighted to find so many good reviews on this model. My last pair was huge, heavy, and never worked very well. When a loud report came in, my old pair would take a long time to shut off the amplifier and a long time to turn it back on - making them almost useless for blocking noise while momentarily making deaf for a few seconds.
By contrast, this pair responds very fast. The amplifier shuts off immediately and comes back on quickly - so much so that you might not know they're working. Yet, it's doing what it's supposed to do - filtering out the loud reports.
There are a few design features which are marvelous but needs some getting used and not quite explained in the manual. The first surprise was the AGC - Automatic Gain Control. After turning up the volume in a quiet room I found it amplifying sounds 10x above normal. I could hear the creaking in the floor boards until I turned it back down. But, at the range things were different - the headphones will adjust themselves to the ambient noise quite well.
As I've read in another review elsewhere, I heard a cyclic buzzing sound in the left ear: buzz.... buzz.... buzz.... I wasn't sure if I read this to be a problem with this model or if I was reading a review on another model. Let me save you some hassles. The buzzing was present only when I was standing close to my cable TV box. Once I moved to another room the buzzing went away entirely. This is an RF shielding problem with the cable box provided by FIOS and should not be a problem with normal use.
Other nice features - automatic shut-off. More times than I care to admit, I forget to turn off my headphones and drained the battery. No longer a problem.
Lightweight - these are actually a bit thinner than non-electronic model hearing protectors, look great, and fold up compact. Now you won't look like a total geek on the firing line.
Highly directional microphones facing backwards. This one took me a while to get used to. Most of the amplified sounds are coming from behind me. This makes great sense since anyone talking to me will be behind me at the firing range. The only thing in front of me is a big, loud, noisy gun so the microphones naturally point backwards.
Aux input jack. The headphone comes with a patch cord (and fresh batteries). I tried this with my iPhone and was pleasantly surprised how well this worked. With a combination of the volume on the iPhone (or iPod) and volume on the headphones you can strike a good balance between ambient noise, conversation, and your "tunes." At the range, however, I declined to take advantage of playing music while shooting because I thought it might be too distracting. I might try it in the future. One caveat - don't expect high fidelity while playing music. I get a "decent" sound from my iPhone using the Aux input jack but no where near as nice a pair of regular headphones.
Sweet-looking volume control. Nothing says "geek" like a volume control knob sticking straight out. But the volume control on/off switch is recessed in a stylish manner which just looks great. This also reduces the chance that you'll break it off when you stuff them into your bag.
This is the best electronic headphones I've ever used. The price is great. Amazon is the place to buy it. If you're looking for headphones for the gun range which will both protect your hearing while allowing you have normal spoken conversation you can't do any better than these.
