Anyone who's read about humidifiers knows they operate best in an open environment--they are not designed to figure out how to go down a hall or around a corner! That said, even though I live in a 600 sq. ft. apartment, I used the Hunter Carefree with Permawick for years...and years... in a 120 sq. ft. BR with the door closed. I am sensitive to noise, but I was so happy that the noise indicated humidity that I soon adjusted. The one thing I did not like about my unit was the fact that I was unable to turn the nite light off! I was a bad girl and did not clean the Permawick with vinegar as suggested by the owners manual and over time, all those little holes in the honeycomb filter got clogged. Operator error! Otherwise, I really, really loved that unit and this year will be buying another one. I'm thinking the Ultra Care Free--the one without the filter!
