Well - you're not supposed to do what I've done, but I put this mat under a braided rug on my wife's side of the bed. This is over an unheated (but insulated) crawl space. It has always been a 'cold spot' for her. Since the heater is temp-regulated, I don't see where I can get in trouble with this - a rubber-backed rug may be another matter.
She reports that now she can sit on that side of the bed and brush her hair. I have the thing on a timer coming on in the evening,and then morning. I can tell that it helps warm the room as well.
There is that 'rubbery' smell that I don't really find so bad (neither does my wife, and she's pretty smell-sensitive). that should wear off with time.
All in all - very satisfied, and a great price.
